Job Overview:
The Inventory Accountant is responsible for the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, reporting and analysis necessary to ensure the accuracy and completeness of cost of sales, gross margin & inventory accounts in support of the Company’s consignment inventory program with Amazon as well as for the Company’s 900+ stores, distribution centers and E-Comm business. As Leslie’s is a newly public company following an IPO in October 2020, the Inventory Accountant will be involved in developing and administering effective and efficient inventory accounting processes and controls, while ensuring best practice operations and continuous improvement in accuracy and efficiency. This role requires collaboration and partnership with a wide variety of teams across the business and meeting both recurring and ad hoc requests from customers, internal/external audit and supporting special projects as needed. The position is based at Leslie’s corporate office in Phoenix, Arizona with a hybrid schedule, in office Tuesday through Thursday and work-from-home on Monday and Friday.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare period-end entries, account reconciliations, and account analyses with appropriate internal control documentation and support for assigned areas, including but not limited to, inventory, sales, cost of goods sold, scrap, and reserves.
- Participate in the period-end closings by ensuring the accurate and timely completion of the assigned close-related responsibilities while focusing on strategies to drive the reduction of the close timeline.
- Review, investigate, and resolve accounting discrepancies and reconciling items.
- Perform detailed variance analysis on assigned accounts to understand reasons for changes and help assure accuracy.
- Perform transactional research and analysis to identify and resolve issues related to inventory shrink and margin.
- Prepare schedules and analysis that support inventory valuations.
- Research variances between book and physical inventory values and work with field personnel to resolve inventory variances.
- Recommend, support and implement process improvements to the company's accounting processes, policies and procedures.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures with a focus on internal controls; assist in the improvement of internal control activities.
- Provide internal and external auditors with requested documentation on a timely basis.
- Create ad-hoc reports and analysis as required.
- Work with internal clients to understand the activities of the business and the effect on the company’s accounting.
- Other projects as requested by management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
- Understanding of U.S. GAAP and internal controls required.
- A minimum of (1-3) years of progressive experience in public accounting and/or public company accounting function.
- Experience with inventory accounting and reporting concepts in a retail environment and supply chain knowledge strongly preferred.
- Intermediate competency in Excel and proficient with other Microsoft Office suite products (e.g., Outlook, One Note, Word, and PowerPoint).
- Experience using ERP software and tools; JDA, Workday Adaptive and Blackline a plus.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with key business partners.
- Must have excellent work habits, including a commitment to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially during period close and reporting cycles.
