The BioInnovations in Brain Cancer Program (BIBC) within the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team as a Program Manager. This $15MM program aims to bring cutting-edge technologies to patients through an interdisciplinary approach across the entire University of Michigan through faculty recruitment, core research services, scientific initiatives, and community building.
The BIBC program is located in the Biointerfaces Institute (BI) at the North Campus Research Complex and the Program Manager Position will be within the College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The BI was established in 2012 to create a new blueprint for biomedical research that encourages out-of-the-box thinking, drives innovation, accelerates the path from basic research to real-world health outcomes, while serving as an ideal training site for the next generation of scientists and thought leaders.
The Program Manager will work with the Program Directors (M. Castro and S. Schwendeman) and leadership team to execute the BIBC programs goals, initiatives, and strategies. The position requires the ability to multi-task and to represent the program among many different stakeholders in a highly professional manner.
The successful candidate must possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively to identify opportunities, metrics, and challenges to the BIBC program and act on them in a timely fashion. The successful candidate will participate in a dynamic environment and must have excellent organization, planning, technical writing, and communication skills.
This position will report to the College of Pharmacy Program Director and work extensively with both BIBC program Directors, and others on the BI and BIBC team to perform the tasks outlined below. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Program Management
- Develop and implement administrative policies and procedures related to various business operations.
- Support the development of scientific themes for Challenge grant program and its management, including the creation and dissemination of the call for proposals, facilitation of proposal review process, and monitoring of awarded projects.
- Develop and implement training/education programs, including research seminar series and translational research workshops.
- Facilitate networking and community building opportunities for program membership.
- Coordinate communications, agenda, and meetings, and serve as administrative liaison with inter- and cross-collaborative on- and off-campus and maintain a strong positive relationship with higher UM administration (Deans, Institutes, Chairs).
- Support planning and lead execution for bi-annual brain cancer conference.
- Work with the financial specialist to ensure fiscal responsibility and ensure budgeting and expenses are accurate.
- Work with core directors and leadership team to develop and implement a recharge core model.
- Work with leadership team and partner units to manage faculty recruiting activities.
Data Collection and Analysis
- Provide comprehensive data collection and analyses of information across multiple functions including financial, research administration, equipment/services utility, etc.
- Establish and maintain a database for benchmarking and metrics for reporting to stakeholders, including number of publications and citations/impact factor, presentations, grant submissions, funding/awards, inventions/patent applications/technology transfer activities, equipment utility, outcomes, etc. of supported researchers, working in partnership with on-campus units and other institutions/entities.
- Analyze data, present in appropriate format, and draft reports in support of leadership decision-making.
Communications
Develop internal and external communications strategies to build program visibility, including:
- Represent BIBC in professional correspondence and interactions.
- Oversee website development and maintenance.
- Lead social media presence and coordinate with campus communication units to promote program.
- Draft correspondence and create presentations, newsletters (internal and external) and annual reports for leadership and other stakeholders with details on productivity, capacity and impact, graphs, charts and other representative figures for slide decks and annual reporting and budget narrative.
Funding and Development
- Identify federal and philanthropic funding opportunities for the program.
- Assist with grant writing, proposal preparation and submission for multi-PI large-scale grants, including coordinating with participating PIs and funding agencies.
- Work with campus partners to interact with philanthropic and industry partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Masters degree in a scientific field
- Three (3) or more years of program management experience or relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Experience in scientific publication and grant writing
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills; both understanding and inspiring
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Doctorate degree in biomedicine, life sciences or related fields.
- Knowledge of the University's procedures and policies
- Public relations experience
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
40 hours per week, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
This position may be eligible for one (1) or two (2) days of remote work per week as workload and schedule allows.
