Position Summary: The radiation therapist safely and correctly operates radiation producing equipment to simulate patients for treatment and administer radiation therapy treatments, as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. Participates in quality assurance programs, radiation safety, and training of staff/students.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Administers radiation treatments as prescribed by the radiation oncologist.
- Maintains EMR and other documentation related to treatment simulation and delivery.
- Performs simulation procedures, as ordered by the radiation oncologist, for the purpose of treatment planning.
- Fabrics treatment immobilization devices and treatment aids, as ordered by the radiation oncologist, for the purpose of treatment planning.
- Participates in imaging and alignment procedures for radiation treatment delivery, as directed by the radiation oncologist.
- Schedules simulation and treatment appointments; facilitates communication of scheduling with patient and staff.
- Captures and verifies/corrects all charges for services rendered.
- Responsible for patient education and associated documentation.
- Follows radiation safety protection guidance and ALARA principles for patients and personnel.
- Utilizes incident reporting and learning system for reporting near misses, variances, and unsafe conditions.
- Performs machine, equipment, and treatment plan quality assurance.
- Actively involved in quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs for radiation therapists.
- Follows department and organization policies and procedures.
- Performs clinical training of radiation oncology staff where applicable.
- Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Required:
- Associate degree in radiation therapy.
- Board certified in radiation therapy from American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
- BLS certification as healthcare provider or obtains within 6 months of employment as a radiation therapist.
- Two years prior experience working as a radiation therapist.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy.
- Active member of the American Society of Radiation Therapists (ASRT).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills necessary to provide patient instruction and education.
- Demonstrated competency in the full range of radiation therapy treatment techniques and simulation.
