Position Summary
This is a temporary or on-call position. Provides direct nursing care, counseling and instruction to patients in a health care clinic.
Unit Position Summary
- Completes competency checklist while being observed by an experienced SANE.
- Provides direct medical-forensic care for patients presenting following sexual assault from the MSU community and the four surrounding counties (Ingham, Eaton, Shiawassee and Clinton).
- Provides comprehensive clinical care including repeat physical assessments, immunizations, medication administration, and photo documentation, as appropriate.
- Provides immediate, victim-centered crisis intervention and emotional support for patients in the context of the medical exam.
- Provides support outside the context of the medical exam by linking survivors in person with trained advocates who can provide confidential advocacy, crisis intervention, and supportive services.
- Ensures advocates are available to survivors before, during, and after the medical exam/evidence collection.
- Offers emergency contraception for sexual assault survivors who are at risk of becoming pregnant and prophylactic antibiotics to treat sexually transmitted diseases that may have been contracted during the assault.
- Provides trauma-informed, culturally sensitive comprehensive clinical care.
- Conducts a thorough medical exam and forensic evidence collection (if applicable per survivor’s decision) utilizing current best practices.
- Describes the medical exam, options for forensic exam, and options for medical treatment including prophylaxis pharmaceuticals.
- Conducts medical history interview.
- Conducts forensic and medical examinations.
- Discusses after-care and treatment options with the patient.
- Utilizes specialized forensic equipment.
- Participates in ongoing training regarding topics such as: identifying patterned injury, documenting injuries, maintaining chain-of-evidence and providing expert witness testimony.
- Follows policies, procedures, and protocols for the program.
- Participates in program staff meetings.
- Assists with routine clinic maintenance, such as stocking of clinic supplies and scheduling.
- Participates in quality measures, including peer review, continuing education, and orienting and precepting new team members.
- If not yet SANE-A Certified, must be actively working towards SANE-A certification, must participate in clinical supervision by a certified SANE, and must complete certification within three years of SANE training.
- Assists with other operational duties as delegated by the Healthcare Program Coordinator/Medical Director.
- 24 hours of continuing education annually, including 4 hours regarding the issues of sexual assault medical-forensic examinations.
- Maintains close working relationship with SANE medical director, Lead SANE and members of other disciplines in the care of sexual assault patients.
- Provides court testimony as needed.
- Collects and accurately reports program and grant-related data.
- Completes other duties as specified and assigned.
Desired Qualifications
English language proficiency; bilingual desired though not required; Three years minimum registered nursing experience in a hands-on patient care capacity; Ability to plan and organize work autonomously; Excellent clinical assessment skills; Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness and good judgment in executing the roles and responsibilities of a nurse; Ability to work collaboratively with other clinicians and victim service responders; completion of 40 hour didactic SANE training approved by International Association of Forensic Nurses.
