Summary: The Associate Veterinarian is responsible for providing and supporting high-quality medical care to multiple species in collaboration with the Lead Veterinarian, Veterinary Technicians, caregivers and support staff. The Associate Veterinarian utilizes a multidisciplinary team focused on excellence in holistic animal care and providing environments conducive to positive welfare.
Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality medical care to multiple species in collaboration with the Lead Veterinarian.
- Assess and collaborate on protocols with the Lead Veterinarian, Sr. Director, and Program Director of Animal Care (animal care leadership). Partners with the Animal Care-Wellness team to assess, revise, and implement standard care protocols. Highlights opportunities and risks associated with protocols and projects.
- Informs on appropriate treatments and processes for high-volume caseloads.
- Cultivates relationships and partners with external animal healthcare providers and interacts effectively with veterinary specialists and referral institutions in partnership with animal care leadership.
- Serves as a strategic thought partner in the development and implementation of a professional development for wellness team members. Collaborates with animal care leadership to train and support caregiving staff in performing treatments and maintaining a standard level of care through specific task/skill training.
- Advises and consults with the wellness leadership on difficult or complex cases, and participates in healthcare rounds, performs physical examinations, conducts testing, and assesses results as needed.
- Enforces risk management strategy for animal care, including oversight of controlled substances and orders and management of prescriptions and medications onsite.
- Partners with the research team to advise on the design and implementation of non-invasive, sanctuary-based research studies at Farm Sanctuary contributing to the body of research on the emotional, social, and cognitive lives of farm animals.
- Serve as advisor to the Animal Sanctuary Welfare team on enrichment.
- Represents Farm Sanctuary in DVM Meetings and to donors and members of the public, as necessary.
- Supports Intern Program by working with Interns onsite in daily tasks.
Qualifications:
- Active Veterinary State License (New York state).
- Doctor of Veterinary degree, or equivalent, from an accredited university.
- Commitment to approaching care from a holistic animal welfare perspective and providing the highest quality of care to animal residents.
- Proven skills in conventional medicine, diagnostics, and healthcare record keeping standards.
- Varied veterinary experience welcome. Large animal and avian experience required (specifically: cattle, goat, sheep, pig). Willingness and ability to develop expertise working with all species in Farm Sanctuary’s care (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese) required.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while effectively managing multiple projects with creativity and flexibility.
- Confidence and ability to work independently, while maintaining consistent communication with the support team.
- Alignment with Farm Sanctuary’s values of compassion, understanding, integrity, transformation, and freedom.
- Familiarity, commitment to, and experience with the practice of equity, social justice, and the principles embedded in Farm Sanctuary’s mission.
Essential Physical Requirements:
- Range of sedentary to heavy work. Exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Prolonged periods of sitting in a stationary position. Must be able to perform repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Must be able to communicate with others to exchange information by means of the spoken word via telephone, video conferencing and other forms of electronic communication utilizing computers and smartphones.
- Worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; performing medical procedures. Must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Must be able to bend, lift, push, stoop, stretch, climb, and crawl and other strenuous physical activities. Must be able to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, and ramps onsite.
- Exposure to and must be able to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
- Position is subject to environmental conditions. Must be able to regularly perform job responsibilities in a variety of weather conditions; some work is done in an outdoor setting that is not climate controlled with remaining work performed in a remote home office.
Job Specifications:
- Terms of employment: This job has an option for Part time or Full-time, permanent non-exempt position. (flexibility based on candidate needs and qualifications)
- Compensation: $60-75/hour
- Farm Sanctuary adheres to a non-negotiation philosophy regarding compensation and benefits outside the posted pay in our commitment to equitable hiring practices.

- Direct reports: NA.
- Location: Watkins Glen, NY.
- Travel: Position is based in Watkins Glen, NY, with periodic travel to Cornell and surrounding area.

- Schedule: If Part Time: 20 to 25 hours per week. Work schedule varies; ideal schedule of Mondays and Wednesdays with rotating coverage of Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Weekend and holiday availability required, Evening hours may be required. On call shifts as assigned. There is flexibility with the schedule if the position is part time.
