The Chief Mine Engineer is responsible for carrying out a full range of engineering functions including, but not limited to: mine planning, mine surveying, blast design, ore control, leach stacking plans, pit designs, stockpile, road and dump designs, mine analysis and production reporting, financial reporting, LOM planning, pit optimization, technical reporting, cross training, and supervision of the mine engineering department.
Essential Functions:
- Technical oversight of the Mine Planning Department.
- Ensure optimized life of mine plans and budgets are completed and in alignment with the site and corporate strategic and financial objectives.
- Oversee the day-to-day operational engineering, short, medium, and long-term mine planning, resource model updates, and cost evaluation.
- Oversee the development of the mine plan to ensure technical aspects of the mine are optimized.
- Ensure the delivery of timely and high-quality technical support to Mine Operations and Capital Projects.
- Ensure proper reporting in place to track performance against established site metrics and KPIs and ensure proactive planning in place to mitigate risk to plan.
- Collaborate with other departments to implement continuous improvement projects.
- Promote and ensure adherence to safety and environmental policies.
- Responsible for ensuring forecasts to project performance against budget.
- Provide leadership that fosters teamwork and drives business objectives.
- Analyze and make recommendations on ways to improve mine operating performance, including exploration projects.
- Interface with mining contractor on technical issues and conditions.
- Manage and direct the activities of the surveyors, provide direction and coaching.
- Develop and contribute to the development of standardized and best practice work procedures of surveying activities.
- Provide support and oversee outside engineering required for evaluating potential projects including completing internal evaluations as well as external NI 43-101 studies.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering or related degree or equivalent experience required.
- Five (5) years experience in the mining industry required.
- Practical experience in surface mining operations required.
- Knowledge of surface mining methods and design required.
- Knowledge of MineSight mining software preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Strong computer skills with mine design programs preferred.
- Ability to communicate (verbal and written) effectively required.
- Experience with the life of mine planning in mining operations required.
Safety:
Expected to always wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while in a production environment (Hard Hat, Steel Toed Boots and Reflective Visible Clothing/Vest) or as required for the specific job duty. Must be able to wear a respirator to perform specific job duties by utilizing a ½ or full-face respirator. Be alert and observe, correct, and report unsafe conditions. Follow operating procedures and comply with all regulatory requirements. Assure that appropriate task training has been completed and documented for all equipment, vehicles, and systems.

The employee is occasionally exposed to cold, wet, hot and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. When in the field, appropriate hearing protection may be needed.
