Responsibilities
Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis; follows standard procedures to perform routine, timed and STAT moderate and complex laboratory tests; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems maintaining written or computer documentation; reports all critical values following laboratory protocol; maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration; operates and utilizes necessary programs on LIS, HIS or PC; draws blood specimens from patients; monitors the work pending log of designated section and documents action taken; maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment/instrument and replenishing supplies in a timely manner; follows procedures for hazardous waste management; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; maintains accurate and complete records by analyzing quality control data, evaluating the results and taking appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision, documenting results or actions in writing or by computer, documenting customer complaints, testing or reporting errors and presenting each to supervisor for corrective action; accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit; completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations: Neonate, Infant-Toddler, Preschool, School age/Adolescent, Reproductive Age, Post/Peri Menopausal; participates on committees as assigned; participates in Performance Improvement activities through quality measurement or participation of ICARE process as assigned; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; participates in continuing education activities; participates in proficiency testing program(s); teaches instrument operation or procedures to Clinical Laboratory Science students or new employees as assigned; utilizes proper body mechanics when: moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety; moving equipment/supplies that is necessary to perform essential functions; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama with major course work in Medical Technology or related sciences, four years of clinical laboratory and Blood Bank experience, and certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologist as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.
