General Position Summary:
Accurately administers external beam radiation therapy to patients according to the physician prescription. Records all aspects of treatment and accounts for any deviation in the process. Immediately notifies physician or director of any error.
Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:
- Perform start up procedures for the linear accelerator and the simulator.
- Consistently performs morning QA.
- Documents QA and report deviations of > or = to 5% to the director or physicist.
- Performs conventional and CT simulations in a reproducible manner.
- Fabricates immobilization devices and custom blocking.
- Mounts compensators accurately per field.
- Prepares patient for treatment based on documentation from simulation.
- Accurately completes photon and electron block fabrication.
- Mounts 3D Compensators as directed.
- Performs Field QA for IMRT and compensator fields.
- Documents patient setup and communicates deviation or problems to the physician.
- Completes daily treatment according to the physician order and treatment plan.
- Performs weekly portal imaging or IGRT as directed.
- Accurately shifts patient as directed by the physician.
- Maintains patient appointment within 5 minutes of scheduled time.
- Schedules appointments appropriately and accurately submits billing.
- Interacts with dosimetry, retrieves DRRs, calculations, and treatment plans.
- Attaches treatment plans to the patient's electronic chart.
- Inputs and verifies accuracy of information recorded.
- Verifies the presence of required documentation.
- Notifies the physician if documentation is missing or inaccurate.
- Performs weekly chart checks.
- Assists MD with On treatment visits (OTV’s).
- Documents height in inches and weight in KG.
- Orders inventory and supplies, maintains stocks rooms.
- Participates in chart rounds and tumor boards.
- Practices all aspects of radiation safety and reports any machine malfunctions.
- Displays proper etiquette and mannerisms that reflect the Service Standard Behavior Guidelines.
- Promotes the Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization.
Secondary Functions:
- Participates in departmental and hospitalwide informational meetings and inservices, including staff meetings, hospitalwide forums, and seminars.
- Reviews department policies and procedures annually.
- All other duties as assigned.
Job Scope:
This job involves recurring work situations with occasional variations from the norm, a high level of complexity, typical operation from established and well-known procedures, and performance of duties under independently-minimal direction.

Interpersonal Contacts:
Contacts are normally made with others both inside and outside the hospital, including own department, staff, and supervisor. These contacts frequently contain confidential/sensitive information necessitating discretion at all times and may include face-to-face, telephone, and e-mail communication with staff, patients, and physicians.
Specific Job Skills & Mental Activities:
This position requires operational knowledge of all office equipment in the Oncology Department (including fax, printer, phone systems, and computer), commonly used hospital computer programs (including Hospital Information Systems), and all department specific equipment (including Linear Accelerator, simulator, film processor, and Heustis block cutter). Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. Must also be service-oriented and have excellent customer service skills, professional interpersonal skills, time management skills, good math skills, and the ability to prioritize work.
Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Current ARRT National Certification for Radiation Therapist licensure (required).
- Current AZ State CTT Radiation Therapist certification (required).
- Basic computer skills (required).
Physical Demands & Job Conditions:
Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is subject to contact with chemicals, contact with infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, extensive close work, extensive computer work, and encounters with upset/disturbed individuals.
Physical motions include finger dexterity, standing, walking, stooping, crawling, talking, reaching, feeling, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing, grasping, listening/hearing, handling, lifting up to 50-100 pounds, and repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and feet.
This is a safety sensitive position.
