Ultrasound Technologist (Ultrasound Tech)
To perform routine and specialized examinations in Ultrasound; adapt procedures to obtain specific diagnostic and/or therapeutic results; prepare patients for examinations. This requires independent judgment to adapt procedures to obtain specific diagnostic results under the direction of a radiologist.
- Performs ultrasound procedures in a manner consistent with guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards of Medical Imaging.
- Ensures accurate and complete examination.
- Exhibits competency in performing ultrasound procedures.
- Images required views demonstrating appropriate anatomy and pathology.
- Knowledgeable of catheters, biopsy instruments, and sterile trays and prepares these items as necessary.
- Obtains accurate histories and explains rationale for procedure to patients/families.
- Enhances image quality through the use of appropriate transducers and machine settings.
- Evaluates the finished images to ensure diagnostic exams are submitted to the radiologists.
- Maintains quality care throughout the procedure.
- Assesses the abdominal arterial & venous system using color imaging.
- Maintains working knowledge of equipment to function in all areas of ultrasound.
- Performs reasonable troubleshooting of ultrasound equipment.
- Reports equipment problems through appropriate channels and documents issues for staff notification.
- Maintains a clean work area and checks and stocks all supplies in their specific area.
- Verifies pertinent accessories assigned to rooms.
- Documents areas of concern.
- Sets up trays with sterile field for radiologist.
- Assists radiologist with biopsy procedures.
- Orders labs and pathology tests under the direction of a radiologist.
- Performs support functions of the Medical Imaging department.
- Ensures patient expectations and needs are met and assumes personal responsibility for training fellow technologists/students.
- Processes images and paperwork promptly to ensure timely turnaround in providing reports to the physician's office.
- Completes all appropriate paperwork to facilitate timely and accurate reporting.
- Maintains and coordinates patient flow to ensure efficient and expedient patient care.
- Enters patient information into HIS system promptly and accurately to ensure efficient patient throughput.
- Maintains the QA, QC, QI programs.
- Shares knowledge and guides fellow technologists/students with proper department protocol and procedures.
- Displays a professional attitude toward fellow technologists/students.
- Fosters mutual respect and creates a productive learning environment.
