The Loudoun County Attorney's Office is seeking an attorney to focus on land use, zoning, and comprehensive planning and development matters. This attorney will provide legal advice and counsel to County staff, the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission, and other advisory boards and commissions in matters related to the review and process of land development applications, and the interpretation and enforcement of the County's land development ordinances. This attorney may also represent the County and its officials in land use litigation, zoning appeals, and Code enforcement proceedings.
The successful candidate will provide legal advice and counsel to County staff, the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission, and other advisory boards and commissions in matters related to the review and processing of land development applications, and the interpretation and enforcement of the County’s land development ordinances. Responsibilities may include:
- Coordinating review of subdivision site plans and surety instruments;
- Reviewing proffers and special exception conditions;
- Drafting and reviewing proposed ordinance amendments;
- Amendments to the Comprehensive Plan;
- Negotiating, drafting, and/or reviewing deeds, easements, and land development agreements;
- Drafting or reviewing staff reports for the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission.
This attorney may also represent the County and its officials in land use litigation, zoning appeals, and Code enforcement proceedings.
Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with clients and third parties (including land development applicants), manage multiple projects timely and efficiently, attend evening meetings as needed, and may provide supervision of attorneys and/or paralegals. Strong legal analysis, written and oral advocacy, problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills are required. Demonstrated experience concerning Virginia local government law and/or zoning and land development law is preferred.
Hiring salary commensurate with experience. This position may be filled at any of the following classifications, depending on experience:
- Senior Deputy: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and at least six (6) years of experience as a licensed practicing attorney, including at least four (4) years of experience in local government or a specific relevant practice area, and one (1) year of supervisory experience, with a salary range of $116,166.02-$220,715.42.
- Deputy: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; at least five (5) years of experience as a licensed practicing attorney, including at least three (3) years of experience in local government or a specific relevant practice area, with a salary range of $104,775.08-$199,072.67.
- Senior Assistant: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; at least three (3) years of experience as a licensed practicing attorney, including at least two (2) years of experience in local government or a specific relevant practice area, with a salary range of $96,159.04-$177,894.21.
JD degree from an accredited law school. Must be a member of the Virginia State Bar.
