About the Role
The Equipment Specialist position secures ocean carrier and railroad equipment for the movement of domestic cargo. The position is responsible for the strategic planning of equipment that adds value to the services offered to the customer and the negotiation of repositioning fees assessed to ocean carrier customers.
What you'll do:
- Manage specific Matson 53' markets, inventory, reporting, invoicing, and related tasks.
- Negotiate rates with our Matson 53' depots, vendors, and drayage partners.
- Maintain Matson 53' and domestic repo supplier inventories and communicate equipment availability to Customer Service Representatives, Pricing Analysts, and Sales personnel.
- Negotiate with repo suppliers for capacity and buydowns.
- Work with pricing to support our domestic repo business as well as conversion of current 40' business to repo.
- Receive and fulfill orders from Customers and Sales personnel and identify sources for and procure equipment.
- Develop and implement an equipment use strategy.
- Develop drayage and railroad equipment contacts to assist Customer Service, Sales, Pricing, and other departments in securing domestic equipment.
- Research and create accessorials for our Matson 53' fleet, Repo Suppliers, as well as Blume expired and cancelled reservation charges for Accounting.
- Update and maintain per diem and storage costs summary worksheets.
- Comply with all company rules, policies, and procedures. Work and behave safely by following all safety rules and regulations.
- Perform any task required to support customer requirements and company goals.
You have these qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED and three (3) or more years of related industry experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Demonstrated professional and pleasant behavior and effective communication in stressful situations.
- Strong interpersonal and demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including excellent telephone skills.
- Strong ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks.
- Work well with others, including vendors, suppliers, and internal and external customers to achieve common goals.
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing customer requests and manage seasonally heavy workloads.
- Working knowledge of MS Office programs or other comparable computer software programs.
- Excellent customer service skills at all times.
- Demonstrated ability to lead people and achieve results through others.
- Ability to organize people and processes and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems at the strategic and functional levels and develop procedural changes.
- Previous transportation industry experience and in-depth knowledge of the intermodal transportation industry.
- Ability to develop relationships with key suppliers and carriers and gain extensive knowledge of equipment availability and processes in the intermodal/transportation industry.
Extra credit if you have:
- Degree in transportation, business administration or related field.
The annual salary range for this position in California is $60,000 - $85,000. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
