DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Botanic Garden https://arboretum.ucsc.edu/ is a unit within the Division of Finance, Operations and Administration. Our division includes a broad and diverse set of operational units whose team members work daily to support the core mission of UC Santa Cruz.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability, the Executive Director provides leadership for the Arboretum & Botanic Garden at UC Santa Cruz. The Executive Director manages staff, budgets, philanthropic and capital development, collections, grounds, educational programs, and retail operations.
JOB DUTIES
50% - Arboretum Leadership
- Provide leadership, guidance and oversight of the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum.
- Ensure compliance with campus and government policies and best practices.
- Lead fundraising for the Arboretum, including donor cultivation.
20% - Management
- Manage staff; responsible for performance management of staff members.
20% - Collections Management and Care
- Oversee operations of the gardens in accordance with best industry practices.
10% - Education, Interpretation and Outreach
- Develop and participate in educational programming at or sponsored by the Arboretum.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in a related field, and/or equivalent experience.
- Experience in fundraising and managing staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in a related discipline.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
