About the National MPS Society:
The National MPS Society exists to find cures for the MPS and ML II/III disorders. For the last fifty years, our research, advocacy, and family support efforts have provided a sense of community and hope for affected individuals and their families across the nation. The Society currently serves a member base of more than 2,600 people with nine professional staff and a $3 million budget, all while maintaining its position as a leader in the rare disease space.
About the CSO:
The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of the Society oversees science policy implementation and initiatives involving the basic, translational, and clinical sciences. The position supports the mission of the Society by furthering the goals of improved therapies and access for our patient community. The CSO interacts with a diverse network of colleagues, including allied advocacy organizations, and with the policy, biopharmaceutical, and academic communities.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the President and CEO, the BOD, and staff to fulfill the mission of the National MPS Society.
- Accomplish the goals of better treatment and access to the Society Community.
- Provide scientific and research advocacy leadership to the Society and Allied Communities, at both national and international levels.
- Oversee the extramural grants program of the National MPS Society.
- Support, manage, and coordinate efforts of the SAB and the SAB-GC.
- Network and interact with allied patient advocacy and policy non-profit organizations, academic and research partners, and biopharma industry stakeholders.
- Represent the Society at relevant national and international meetings in support of the Society’s mission.
- Support Family Support, Advocacy, Communications, and Development efforts at the Society.
- Contribute to a diverse and supportive professional community and environment.
- Ensure financial stewardship of the Society’s operational and research resources.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Include:
- An M.S., M.P.H., M.G.C., or equivalent degree in a field relevant to inborn errors of metabolism and the mission of the Society, with a minimum of 10 years’ work experience in a relevant area.
- An understanding of the history of relevant therapeutic areas and a vision for effective diagnostic tools and therapies.
- Superior written and spoken language skills and exemplary interpersonal skills.
- Excellent management, execution, and logistic skills to support the CSO’s research vision.
- Willingness to spend up to one third of the CSO appointment with offsite travel.
- An ability to balance the immediate needs of our patient community with the slow progress of technical advancements.
Preferred Qualifications Include:
- An M.D., D.O., D.V.M., and/or Ph.D., or equivalent degree in a relevant field, with a minimum of one year’s work experience.
- Demonstrated history of management of research endeavors.
- Demonstrated history of patient engagement.
- Demonstrated history of policy engagement.
- Fluency in a foreign language.
