Psychiatrist - Metropolitan Detention Center
The University of New Mexico, Department of Psychiatry, is seeking a full-time staff physician to serve as an MDC Site Psychiatrist. The Psychiatrist will provide onsite psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for inmates referred by medical or clinical services staff. Responsibilities include providing written summaries of history, diagnosis, and treatment course. The Staff Psychiatrist will report directly to the site Psychiatric Director.
Minimum Job Requirements of a Psychiatrist:
- Graduate of an accredited medical school and have completed an appropriate psychiatric residency.
- Fully licensed to practice medicine in the state of employment.
- Current DEA registration.
- Preferably board certified or board eligible to practice psychiatry and has administrative experience in corrections medicine.
- Subject to initial and ongoing security clearance requirement.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Psychiatrist:
- Provide onsite psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for inmates referred by medical or clinical services staff, including written summaries of history, diagnosis, and treatment course in accordance with national standards and the McClendon Agreement.
- Provide psychiatric services for inpatients, staffing treatment planning, and regular review of all inmates assigned, including those in the general population who need regular psychiatric/mental health follow-up.
- Provide psychiatric services for inmates needing transfer to Mental Health facilities, including work up and court hearing testimony as needed.
- Act as regular psychiatrist and participate in treatment programming and planning for the Mental Health Unit.
- Regular staffing and contact with Mental Health Unit staff and supervisor, discussion of problem cases, follow up and monitoring of medication, and general psychiatric input.
- Provide medication management to all inmates admitted to the Mental Health Unit and individual and/or group therapy as appropriate.
- Approve all admissions and discharges into the Mental Health Unit and monitor treatment plans.
- Provide in-service education to the Mental Health Unit staff as needed.
- Be available on a scheduled basis for on-call needs of the Mental Health Unit.
- Participate in Treatment Audit Committee and attend meetings as directed by jail administration.
Physical Requirements of a Psychiatrist:
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects including the human body.
- Kneeling, stooping, crouching, and/or crawling occasionally required; frequent walking throughout the site, including walking up and down flights of stairs.
- Must have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental, and emotional) situations encountered on the job.
- Occasional running when responding to emergencies; must be able to perform BLS.
