Job Summary
The Vice President of Human Resources is responsible for the overall oversight of the Human Resources department and for strategic vision for Whitman-Walker's human resources portfolio. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Vice President of Human Resources is a leader charged with creating and supporting a collaborative, and affirming workplace where patients, community members and employees are able to contribute at their highest value to our organizational vision. Equity and Belonging are major areas of focus for Whitman-Walker, and are the responsibility of all of Leadership, with the VP of HR playing a critical role. The Vice President will set, enforce, and evaluate legally compliant human resources policies, procedures, and best practices. They will work closely with Senior Leadership to design, operate and oversee a talent management strategy focused on excellence, integrity and equity as Whitman-Walker strives to be a best-in-class employer.
Primary Essential Duties
- Key member of Senior Leadership Team at Whitman-Walker and serves as senior advisor to CEO, WWH and CEO, WWHS as oversight over all HR functions across WW's entities.
- Provides education and guidance to managers and executives on employment-related matters and decisions.
- Oversees the entire Talent Management Strategy for Whitman-Walker from job identification and job description development, through hiring and retention strategies, through supporting employees who are ready to exit.
- Oversees an active HR focus on Equity and Belonging work, including compliance focused items such as reporting on and measuring the affirmative action plan and related Equal Employment Opportunity laws and regulations.
- Partners with Senior Leadership to advance and foster equity and belonging, including the creation of strategic goals with data-driven metrics to enhance internal and external accountability.
- Oversees and implements Whitman-Walker's Compensation policies and programs, providing recommendations for change to Executive Leadership and the Boards of Directors, as necessary.
- Oversees and implements comprehensive employee benefits, providing employees with access to company-sponsored health insurance, retirement plan, employee assistance and other benefits.
- Responsible for developing and maintaining current personnel policies, disseminating these through an Employee Handbook and other documents, and providing training to all employees.
- Serves as primary contact for the Union and its representatives, including regular meetings and relationship building; responding to requests for information; investigating and resolving concerns and grievances and providing strategic advice and guidance for collective bargaining.
- Develops and implements training and employee education programs to ensure compliance with local and federal standards regarding sexual harassment and discrimination.
- Conducts confidential, sensitive investigations when breaches of company policy and/or local or federal law occur, ensuring efficient, ethical resolution of all violations.
- Ensures that all employee personnel files are complete and compliant with laws and regulations and implements ongoing audit and improvement processes to demonstrate such.
- Maintains a respectful, non-judgmental, and compassionate manner with patients/clients/staff.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service by identifying and exceeding customer requirements.
- Participates in organizational quality and performance improvement activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Talents Required
- Demonstrated knowledge of Human Resources practices, policies and procedures, including those pertaining to recruitment, compensation, ethics, labor relations, affirmative action, payroll processing and benefits administration, with specific knowledge of the current laws and regulations governing these areas.
- General knowledge of healthcare industry and/or organizations.
- Proven ability to implement compensation, performance evaluation, recruiting, affirmative action and benefits administration systems as necessary.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to forge relationships with outside organizations, healthcare facilities, vendors and business leaders.
- Ability to conduct confidential, sensitive investigations on violations of company policy and/or local and federal law as necessary.
- Sensitivity to all areas of diversity, including HIV status, race, ethnicity, ability, age, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, related field or equivalent work experience required.
- PHR or SPHR certification in Human Resources preferred.
- 10+ years of experience working in human resources required.
- 5 or more years of experience managing human resources personnel required.
- 2 or more years of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
