Summary:
The Director of Clinical Research Financial Operations works to cultivate a culture of high quality clinical research financial operations to support RUSH researchers in the delivery of efficient, high-quality research. This role oversees the complex interdependent ecosystem of clinical research financial operations ranging from clinical expenses, faculty and staff compensation, and overall fund management specifically earnings management and payment reconciliation. This role works closely with Office of Research Affairs (ORA) Process Improvement, Education and Training, and clinical research budget and conduct leaders in ORA as well as across the organization. Collaborates and facilitates coordination across systems (CTMS, EMR) and with reporting tools (Research Administrative Data Warehouse). Collaborates directly with AVPs and VP of Research to ensure seamless prioritization and improvement of high priority research endeavors. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Required Job Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree
- Ten or more years relevant (e.g., research and/or healthcare finance) work experience is required.
- 2 years’ experience as a people management / supervisory experience, especially in a research setting.
- Nuanced understanding of the clinical research financial lifecycle.
- Formal training in Epic Research is required (certification is preferred, but not required).
- Subject matter expert in Epic Research functions and relationship with OnCore.
- Subject matter expert for the Clinical Trials Management System and all other research IS infrastructure systems to coordinate integrated efforts to support clinical research data infrastructure.
- Demonstrated problem-solving, critical decision making and professional judgment in a research or healthcare setting.
- Strong analytical skill with a high attention to details.
- Ability to set and meet deadlines.
- Ability to function efficiently and effectively in high stress situations.
- Drives clinical research by implementing policy, processes, and procedures related to human subjects protections. Implements all federal regulations as applicable.
- Requires a commitment to customer service and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a complex academic environment.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills with a wide range of individuals in a cross-functional environment, including internal and external team members, as well as senior leadership.
- Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Proficiency in and ability to teach to the Code of Federal Regulations pertaining to Human Subject Protections, including 45CFR46, 21CFR50 and 56, Good Clinical Practice, the Declaration of Helsinki, the Belmont Report, and HIPAA.
- At least 8 years of experience managing clinical research finances (trials, clinical billing, or other relevant domain).
Responsibilities:
- Directs and manages clinical research financial operations for the ORA as well as across the organization. Establishes goals and associated strategic initiatives and implements.
- Develops, coordinates and communicates key performance metric dashboards for all aspects of clinical research financial operations.
- Oversee ERM (Epic) and CTMS (OnCore) system use and approval process as well as associated quality assurance review processes to ensure appropriate and accurate user of systems to support clinical research conduct and financial operations.
- Ensures that all standards and guidance about clinical research finance are aligned with institutional goals.
- In partnership with research leadership, identifies areas at Rush that require additional oversight or resources.
- Defines and ensures documentation of clinical research financial operations standards as well as the project technology scope and supporting business goals in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
- Participates in quarterly re-alignment session to make any necessary adjustment to ensure strategies, tactics, processes and results are aligned.
- Collaborates with executive sponsors to ensure resources are in place to ensure success of improvement initiatives.
- Oversees the development of standard work, guidance documents, policies and standard operating procedures in conjunction with The Office of Research Affairs, Corporate and Research Compliance, Revenue Cycle, and Research leadership.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge and expertise in federal/state/private agency regulations and policies and stays abreast of new laws and regulations which affect clinical research financial and contractual issues.
- Advises, and trains faculty and staff to ensure compliance with institutional, sponsor, and federal regulations for contractual and financial matters.
- Recommends performance enhancement and efficiency opportunities for better alignment.
- Responsible for coordinating and overseeing (i.e. directing) the Epic (RUSH Electronic Medical Record) research related activities within the Office of Research Affairs as well as across the organization to support highest level, compliant clinical research financial operations.
- Responsible for the direction and management of the clinical research financial business operations within the Office of Research Affairs as well as across the organization especially as related to information into and out of the EMR/Epic.
