Business Intelligence Engineer
The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (IRE) at Stevens is inviting applications for the position of Business Intelligence Engineer to join a team of talented colleagues. Under the supervision of the Associate Director, the Business Intelligence Engineer will design, develop, and support Business Intelligence solutions to turn data into actionable insights supporting university decision making, analytics, and research. An ideal candidate should be extremely data-savvy, and should have solid skills in data modeling, data transforming procedure, and overall business intelligence solutions.
Responsibilities
- Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional/non-functional business requirements. Work with subject matter experts to design and develop data models, security structures and reports across subject areas and technical domains. Identify, design, delegate and implement internal process improvements: automate manual processes, optimize data delivery, re-design infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
- Create and manage complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and other database objects. Transform data in the warehouse using dbt.
- Perform data analysis, design, and development of new and ongoing business intelligence (BI) tools (such as Power BI, Tableau) involving complex data structures.
- Build machine-learning algorithms, models, reports, etc., to meet business outcomes and KPIs.
- Plan and conduct data analysis efforts, facilitate design sessions, and collaborate with technical staff, and critical business sponsors to identify and recommend solutions. Initiate or update designs for models supporting data warehouse functionality. Coordinate reviews of data models and data definitions.
- Establish and maintain best practices for the design, development and support of BI solutions including self-service analytics, documentation, metadata creation, use and maintenance, and data naming standards.
- Monitor and take appropriate action to maintain the integrity of the reporting solutions, including security and data quality issues. Respond and resolve operational problems as necessary. Document, troubleshoot, and resolve day to day data issues.
- Maintain a considerable knowledge base of various types of institutional data stored in Workday (Stevens’ student information system), and IRE data repositories, such as student admissions, enrollment, degree data, course data, and faculty data.
- Assist with data collection and dashboard design for all aspects of external data reporting (IPEDS, state reports, college guidebooks, consortium exchange, etc.), and internal reports for academic and administrative units, such as the weekly enrollment census report, the annual benchmarking report, and other institutional analyses.
- Process, clean, and validate the integrity of data to be used for analysis.
- Analyze large amounts of information to find patterns and solutions.
- Document all aspects of data science procedure, with special attention to data retrieval, programming, workflows, and security.
- Proactively and continuously pursue professional development and training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Breakdown of Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- 50%: Data warehouse, ETL, and BI development
- 25%: Data validation and analysis
- 15%: Support BI Solutions and assist with data collection for internal and external data reporting
- 10%: Other duties as assigned in support of overall Institutional Research and Effectiveness strategic goals
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, data sciences, information systems, statistics, or similar discipline.
- 4+ years of Business intelligence development experience. Advanced knowledge and deep expertise in designing data models and developing BI reports.
- Design, Develop and maintain data models, reports, and dashboards (Power BI/Tableau).
- Experience collecting business requirements and building reporting solutions to convert raw data into usable information for analysts and business users.
- Experience with implementing complex row-level and object-level security in Power BI/ Tableau.
- Solid command of relational and dimensional database concepts and principles, data modeling, data warehouse design, data management, data analytics and business intelligence methods, and data integration techniques.
- Strong written and documentation skills for communicating specifications, processes, and metadata to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with machine learning concepts.
- Should be knowledgeable about data quality and governance issues and requirements.
- Professional experience in higher education preferred.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and planning skills with an ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and collaboratively with cross-functional units.
- Sound independent judgment and decision-making.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
This position is predominantly remote.
