Chief Financial Officer
Organization Overview:
Community Services League (CSL), founded in 1916, is one of the Kansas City regions largest social service providers. CSL maintains many innovative anti-poverty programs that help move our community forward. CSL's programs are a blend of philanthropy-funded and government-contracted. CSL projects $10,000,000 in total accounted revenues in 2024, and maintains a paid workforce of 80+ employees, along with 250+ volunteers that work a recurring shift at one of CSL's 12 locations.
Position Overview
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior management position and part of the Executive Team comprised of the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Programs Officer, Chief Development Officer and Chief Operating Officer (COO). The CFO is responsible for leading CSL's efforts in the areas of budgeting, financial record keeping and reporting, insurance reviews, financial policies and procedures, bank transfers, documenting processes, contract administration, and overall financial advisory services. The ideal candidate should show experience in leading financial efforts, working in a collaborative environment, and taking financial data to help share compelling stories of impact.
Reports to: President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Supervisory Responsibility: Directly Up to 5 employees
Responsibilities
The CFO will assure all financial transactions are processed and recorded in a timely manner including:
- Supervision of support staff;
- Prepare financial reports as required by the President/CEO, board of directors, funding organizations, etc.;
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget as well as prepare budgets for contractors and funders;
- Supervise the annual audit for compliance to retain 4-star rating with Charity Navigator.
- Develop and maintain a cost allocation system in order to allocate revenues and expenses in the financial records to various funders, foundations, business units, etc.;
- Assures the computerized accounting system is properly maintained on a timely basis and makes recommendations for future needs.
Strategic Management and Partnerships
The CFO is expected to work well with others and to present oneself well as part of the CSL team that includes staff, volunteers, Board members, community stakeholders as needed.
- Overall Organizational Strategy and Indicators: Help guide the development of the overall organizational strategy and key indicators of success.
- Program Strategy and Indicators: Based on the overall organizational strategy and strategic plan, guide development of financial strategy and indicators.
- Strategy Implementation: Guide the implementation of organizational and financial management strategy across all CSL programs and services.
Culture of Philanthropy:
A culture of philanthropy is where each person in the organization serves as an ambassador by promoting the organization's mission and giving to the agency. The CFO is an ambassador for the agency through his/her cultivation efforts in the community working with various community leaders, other agencies, foundations, and donors.

Overtime (FLSA) Status: Exempt
Hours/Schedule: The typical hours for this position are 8am-5pm, Monday-Thursday and 8am-12pm on Friday. From time to time, this schedule will vary depending on the needs of clients, partners, or programs.
Salary/Benefits:
Salary will be commensurate with experience and begins at a base compensation of $110,000 annually. CSL offers an employee health insurance plan and a retirement savings plan with company contributions, that is available after the required tenure is met.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree in Accounting or related field, minimum eight years experience as an operating accountant, A/P, A/R, financial reporting, and budgeting. CPA or strong experience with accounting in a non-profit/government setting and experience with budgeting and billing for government grants, preferred.
- Experience using computerized accounting programs such as QuickBooks Premier Nonprofit Edition 2020 and business software such as NetSuite.
- Experience leading a team as well as a team player with a high energy level, strong interpersonal communications and multi-tasking skills. The position requires enthusiasm, initiative and flexibility with a willingness to work as needed to accomplish the job.
- Should possess excellent computer and analytical skills (Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, database management, etc.) as well as a familiarity and experience with non-profit accounting.
- Must be highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up processes, able to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints.
