A law firm in Chicago, IL is seeking a senior counsel or junior member-level Taxation and Estate Planning Attorney with 10+ years of experience in tax, estate planning, and administration. The ideal candidate will have significant experience working with family offices, high-net-worth individuals, and C-suite executives. This role involves drafting complex estate planning documents, advising clients on tax strategies, and handling gift and estate tax returns. Candidates with an LLM in taxation and some portable business are preferred.
Duties:
- Advise high-net-worth individuals, families, family offices, and C-suite executives on tax planning, estate administration, and fiduciary duties.
- Draft comprehensive estate planning documents, including wills, trusts, irrevocable trusts, and other related documents.
- Prepare and review gift and estate tax returns, ensuring compliance with federal and state tax regulations.
- Draft limited liability company (LLC) agreements, family limited partnership agreements, and other tax planning-related documents.
- Counsel clients on estate tax controversies, gift tax disputes, and fiduciary issues.
- Assist clients in the administration of estates and trusts, ensuring proper distribution of assets and compliance with legal requirements.
- Provide tax advice related to business succession planning, wealth transfer strategies, and charitable giving.
- Manage contested estate matters and represent clients in tax controversy disputes with the IRS and other taxing authorities.
- Stay updated on changes in tax law, estate planning trends, and legislative developments to provide proactive advice to clients.
- Collaborate with other attorneys and professionals within the firm on complex tax and estate planning matters.
Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the Illinois State Bar and in good standing.
- 10+ years of experience in tax, estate planning, and estate administration.
- Significant experience working with family offices, high-net-worth individuals, and C-suite executives.
Certifications:
- Admission to the Illinois Bar (required).
- LLM in taxation (preferred but not required).
- Certifications related to estate planning or taxation (preferred but not required).
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax laws, estate planning strategies, and gift tax regulations.
- Proven ability to draft complex estate planning documents, including wills, trusts, LLC agreements, and family partnership agreements.
- Experience preparing and filing gift and estate tax returns and addressing related tax issues.
- Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills for drafting legal documents and advising clients on complex tax matters.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with high-net-worth clients and professionals.
- Ability to manage multiple complex cases, provide strategic tax advice and resolve estate and tax controversies.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills for managing estate planning and tax matters efficiently.
- Portable business is preferred but not required.
