Position Overview:
The Novelis Tax team is seeking a Director, North America Tax. The person in this role will report to the VP, Global Tax. The ideal candidate will be responsible for all tax aspects (direct and indirect) of the Novelis North America Region, including inbound and outbound transactions in the United States and Canada. The ideal candidate will handle a wide range of responsibilities and provide support to ensure the integrity and operational efficiency of the tax function. The position works closely with the VP of Tax and Business Leaders in the development of tax planning initiatives and the identification of potential tax issues and recommends solutions. The candidate should possess strong analytical skills, a collaborative work ethic, and proven ability to identify and drive process improvement.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure a high level of integrity in handling the tax provision, effective tax rate (ETR), taxable income, and deferred tax computations in accordance with ASC740, including the proper application of FIN 48 and APB23.
- Own the analysis of R&D projects to optimize the tax credits, automation of direct and indirect tax processes within the region, and the preparation of all external tax reporting for NNA.
- Interface closely with other finance departments and business leaders to identify tax opportunities and risks for the Company.
- Identify and manage the development and analysis of tax optimization strategies to support company business initiatives.
- Work with the VP of Tax on technical tax issues within the US and Canada.
- Monitor legislative changes at US Federal, State, and Canadian taxes, interpret the changes and accurately report the tax impact.
- Support the implementation of the legal entity restructuring and rationalization in the region.
- Design and implement the US tax processes for the new combined US federal and state income tax calculation.
- Maintain effective key controls and ensure the proper level of SOX tax documentation.
- Be responsible for / lead indirect (sales and use, property) tax processes and procedures including return preparation, audit defense, analytical and technical support, etc.
- Partnering with external tax advisors to ensure all work performed by external advisors is completed in a timely and accurate manner; working directly with advisors to resolve issues on an as-needed basis.
- Own the tax audits in the region, perform independent critical analysis of proposed positions and proactively assist with building audit defense strategy.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
- Minimum of 10 years of related work experience
- Proven understanding of direct and indirect tax concepts and the ability to implement solutions
- A strong analytical skillset
- Highly motivated strategic thinker with strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills and shown problem-solving and decision-making capabilities
- Change oriented: open to change (positive or constructive) in response to new information, different or unexpected circumstances, and/or to work in ambiguous situations
- Ability to interpret and strategically apply government regulations and related technical requirements to global business scenarios
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to influence others
- Excellent oral and written communication skills: experience working across multiple levels, functions, and regions; able to communicate complex issues in a clear and concise manner
- Experience in handling multiple types of financial systems
