Summary:
Responsible for establishing effective data management and governance practices, while ensuring adherence to the Data Policy, Standards and Procedures of the Bank. Additionally responsible for managing a team of Segment Data Officers, who function as the execution arm of data governance and management and partnering with stakeholders across the enterprise to ensure lifecycle data quality and management. This includes developing and maintenance of a robust culture that aligns with the organization’s mission, strategy, and objectives, ensuring consistent processes are followed to manage data quality, metadata, lineage, and reference data, as well as ensuring the identification and management of critical data elements, ensuring the data produced by the business segment is fit for both regulatory and management reporting. In addition, the Deputy will also oversee key projects, ensures alignment across departments, facilitates communication amongst and between data organization leadership and staff, and helps in decision-making processes. They often handle administrative tasks, manage special initiatives, and act as a liaison to external stakeholders. The role requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, along with a deep understanding of the data organization’s goals and operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for developing and maintaining a robust culture of effective data management governance practices and providing guidance and oversight to Segment Data Offices as they ensure and maintain those practices, while ensuring adherence to the Data Policy, Standards and Procedures.
- Responsible for coaching, developing and mentoring team members. This includes developing, communicating and measuring performance against goals.
- Fosters a culture of trust and shared responsibility that allows for better coordination across the highly talented team and distributed groups across the enterprise.
- Accountable for ensuring the Segment Data Offices certify and monitor the business’ critical data elements, including the ongoing improvement of data quality, its technical metadata, the associated business definitions, lineage, and reference data within the business segment ensuring that data for regulatory and management reporting is complete, validated, consistent and fit for purpose.
- Leads engagement with Enterprise Data Leaders, Information and Technology Risk Committee (ITRC), Business Data Insights Officers (BDIOs), and Technology Leaders to drive and communicate progress against our goals.
- Collaborates with Segment level Business Leaders and Risk Officers on data matters; escalates to the authoritative governing body Information and Technology Risk Committee (ITRC) as well as the Risk Management Committee (RMC) when required.
- Accountable for identifying data-related controls on systems that support critical segment processes and customers. Additionally, develop business performance reporting and/or dashboards to provide timely insights to enable employees to improve decisions and optimize work, as well as keep management informed.
- Perform other responsibilities and projects as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience working in a data-related position including minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience designing and implementing data management and governance frameworks, preferably in banking/financial services
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters in data analytics or management
- Minimum of 15 years of experience leading data-related projects or programs, including building teams and managing seasoned colleagues and a proven record of providing strategic direction while developing and empowering successful teams.
- Sustained leadership experience in managing data teams and attracting, developing, and mentoring diverse talent.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively across the full spectrum of stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Significant experience with a variety of data platforms and analytical tools.
- Possesses a deep understanding of the legal, compliance, and regulatory issues impacting data and builds trusting relationships with experienced leaders.
- Sound understanding of industry standards from the Enterprise Data Management Council (EDMC) that incorporates BCBS 239, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and other industry recognized standards.
- Ability to develop, communicate and execute on a vision with a passion for data and demonstrated perseverance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of building enthusiastic support and converting resistance to endorsement with robust collaboration with various stakeholders, leaders, and teams across the organization.
- Experience managing department and program budgets.
- Well-versed in industry best practices, tools, and techniques for Data Management and Governance
- Deep knowledge and experience with Data Management and Governance policies, standards, metrics, controls, and processes.
- Ability to lead change by motivating and engaging others.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills that demonstrate personal effectiveness.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with business and functional peers and stakeholders.
- Proactive, self-directed and able to work independently as well as on teams.
- Knowledge of technology and financial industry trends.
- Thought leadership with a focus on business outcomes.
- Thorough knowledge of various software programs including Word and Excel, and the ability to quickly learn additional systems/software.
