About the Job
The Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation (HOT Division) at the University of Minnesota in Twin Cities offers a competitive 8-week Summer Internship Research Program during the dates of 6.10.2024 to 8.10.2024 to undergraduate students. The goal of this program is to encourage the next generation of scientists to become leaders and innovators in the field of hematological and oncological malignancies. For these reasons, the program aims to support interests of each scholar in developing a long-term career in research or clinical disciplines. The goal of these positions is to teach and mentor these students to encourage medical and scientific careers in the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation. All students will be assigned a faculty mentor and research team to learn from and will participate in the PIs research projects. These positions will assist the PIs with their research as well as provide mentorship for students in a research scientific environment as well as career guidance. Students will have hands-on experience as well as info sessions on possible career paths as well as learning from weekly lectures.
Each of the accepted undergrad scholars will take part in numerous aspects of clinical or basic research. Activities in the program include but are not limited to:
- Understand the scientific foundation and current clinical barriers of hematological or oncological diseases.
- Comprehend the landscape of current job opportunities or career trajectories.
- Receive individualized mentorship from established faculty and laboratory members.
- Conduct hands-on experiments as a key laboratory research member; perform laboratory analysis and experimentation and assist with the set up and take down of experiments; assist with the evaluation and recording of results; participate in lab meetings.
- Gain clinical exposure through interactions with faculty and physicians in the hospital.
- Learn from current medical students and researchers about career paths in medicine; attend lectures.
- Interact with peers with similar career interests.
- Draft reports and assist with summarization of data in the form of tables, charts and diagrams; assist with library or literary research.
- Organize and participate in the development of presentation materials for data findings and scientific manuscripts, which could lead to authorship credits.
- Develop the scientific mindset of developing testable hypotheses, research methods, data analysis and writing and figure preparation.

- Learn the research process at a large institution from experienced researchers.
- Gain mentorship from faculty on career development.
- Participate in research project design such as funding pursuits and implementation.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Undergraduate students must be enrolled in an accredited degree program entering a full semester or quarter of school for the 2024-2025 academic year; and plans to pursue a graduate or professional degree in medicine (MD, PhD, PA, etc). Undergrads must be available to work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday between 8 - 4:30 PM (start and end times can be flexible with communications with faculty mentor).
Preferred Qualifications: A basic knowledge of biology terms, biochemistry, physiology, biophysics, epidemiology, statistics or an interest in pursuing the medical field or clinical research is a plus but not required. Candidates should have strong writing and statistical skills.
