This is a part-time role for approximately 25 hours per week. The salary range is $145,000-$155,000.
What you’ll be responsible for:
Under limited supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, the General Counsel is responsible for legal oversight of Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago (JF) and its related and controlled organization activities, including providing legal counsel and/or retaining outside counsel, when appropriate. In this role, you will be responsible for managing legal risk and ensuring legal compliance to protect the organizations’ interests. You will provide support to the organization on a wide range of legal matters and closely collaborate, as relevant, with the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, as well as department heads. You will also liaise with the JF/Jewish United Fund Board when directed to do so by the CEO, COO, or when independent action is necessary.
What you’ll be doing:
- Provide advice and guidance to the organization on a variety of legal issues, including contracts, employment law, non-profit law, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, litigation, and corporate governance with guidance from, and in partnership with, outside counsel.
- Collaborate with executives, managers, and department heads to monitor legal activities, address legal issues, ensure compliance with applicable laws, and develop effective strategies and solutions.
- Assess when outside legal counsel should be retained, considering, together with the relevant executive and/or department head, costs, needs, and existing outside counsel relationships; retain, oversee and review work of outside legal counsel, as appropriate.
- When no outside counsel is engaged, review, draft, and help negotiate contracts and legal documents, ensuring they accurately reflect the organization's objectives and comply with applicable laws and regulations.
- In coordination with HR leadership, ensure compliance with employment and other applicable laws; advise on issues related to hiring, termination, and workplace policies; and engage and manage activities with labor counsel to support the Local 73 SEIU collective Bargaining negotiations.
- Work with the CFO to ensure compliance with tax-exempt status, reporting requirements, and other fiduciary matters.
- Direct activities of Assistant General Counsel, including management of contract review and development and implementation of corporate policies, procedures, and compliance programs.
- Be informed and develop expertise as necessary on new legal matters that arise.
- Stay informed about changes in laws, regulations, and nonprofit industry trends that may impact the organization, and provide proactive advice and recommendations to mitigate legal risks.
- Support JUF Campaign and mandatory campaign-related activities on an ongoing basis.
What you need to succeed:
- J.D. degree from an accredited institution and an Illinois license to practice law
- 10 years+ of legal experience, preferably within a law firm or in a legal position advising large non-profit organizations
- Strong knowledge of Illinois nonprofit law, employment law, contract law, and other relevant legal areas, including charitable giving
- Skilled in negotiating contracts and resolving disputes
- Ability to coordinate with and manage outside counsel
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills. Ability to work well with all levels of employees and management
- Ability to analyze complex legal issues, take effective action, and provide practical solutions
- Commitment to attend relevant programs to remain current in the areas of legal and general business activities (e.g., conferences, seminars)
