Responsibilities
The Chief Financial Officer – Research (CFO-Research) serves as a key member of Mayo Clinic’s Research leadership team, providing key insights on financial and operational matters to support the long term sustainable growth and development of research activities. The CFO-Research plays an active part in setting the vision, direction, and goals for the organization, department, and division, and aligning them with the institutional mission and values. The CFO-Research must identify and analyze external and internal factors that affect the performance and sustainability of the organization, department, or division, and develop and implement solutions and changes to optimize the results.
The position directs the analysis of management financial information that leads to decisions with significant institutional and/or Research shield impact, including but not limited to analysis of opportunities to expand extramurally funded research, maximize clinical and scientific contributions from clinician investigators across the shields, improve alignment with benefactor gifts, and development of long term strategies for funding research. The CFO-Research identifies and executes strategies that lead to improved financial performance of the institution and/or the Research shield while partnering with Research leadership to establish the strategic direction for the Research shield, utilizing knowledge of the external environment. He/she partners with leaders in Practice, Education, Development, and other administrative areas to achieve mutual strategic goals and align Research operations with institutional goals.
The CFO-Research must handle ambiguous situations in a productive and professional manner and lead others through such situations successfully and must prioritize and deploy limited resources across multi-disciplinary, multi-site teams to maximize efficiency while achieving departmental financial targets. The position should enable an environment that allows for creation of the workforce of the future, translating the institutional and/or departmental vision into meaningful and effective results, while spearheading change using effective change management practices.
Responsibilities include planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring, and controlling the operational and administrative activities of the department or division. Responsibilities also include ensuring the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of the processes, systems, and resources that support the delivery of services, specifically:
- serves as a strategic partner to the Executive Dean of Research and the Chair of Research Administration.
- works collaboratively with other members of the Mayo Clinic Finance Dept, Research leadership, to identify, lead and support broad strategic institutional activities and initiatives.
- collaborates and creates a customer service-oriented approach with physician, scientist, and administration leaders throughout Mayo Clinic to enhance relationships and accomplishment of strategic directives.
- maintains the integrity of financial and statistical data and analysis.
- maintains the interpretation and implementation of accounting rules, fiscal compliance, policies and regulations.
- maintains a compliant internal control environment in Research Finance, in partnership with Research Compliance or other accountable persons to ensure a compliant internal control environment for Research overall.
- adheres to all financial and accounting related research governmental regulations.
- formulates solutions and implements change to optimize functional performance.
- develops programs and tools for financial reporting for complex Research activities.
- creates a customer service-oriented Research Finance department adept at working collaboratively with physician/scientist and administrative colleagues throughout the institution.
- develops a robust succession plan for Research Finance that includes coaching and mentoring staff, in partnership with Finance Leadership Team.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree and 10 years of experience in complex and high-performing research, healthcare or related organizations. CPA is preferred. Must possess strong leadership, business, analytical, oral and written communication, presentation skills, and superior interpersonal skills to facilitate effective relationships both within and outside of Mayo Clinic; solid organizational and project management skills; strategic judgment; track record in building positive, cross-functional relationships. He/she must possess political savvy and the ability to function effectively in a complex and often ambiguous environment, with consensus-style operation that expects and promotes teamwork. Must have experience managing and leading large teams with experience in matrix reporting environments a plus.
Must be able to take business services from strategic consultation through tactical execution in a team setting and be able to develop key performance indicators/metrics to ensure success. Experience developing and executing business plans is important. This position requires someone who is a self-starter with ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and who can lead with courage when required. Exercises professional curiosity to evaluate and improve upon existing processes and develop/implement new processes where appropriate. Meets deadlines with enthusiasm and confidence. Proactively identifies and mitigates risk with meticulous project planning and creative solutions.
Must be able to garner trust and influence others. Experience in driving change by influencing senior executives, making recommendations to drive growth or improve ROI, and/or leading implementation of process-based initiatives. High degree of competency in data, analytics, financial analysis and/or directly comparable quantitative skillset. Is a creative problem-solver and adapt at storytelling when reporting outcomes.
