POSITION SUMMARY:
Fabricate pipe, tanks, shell, and various equipment out of miscellaneous steel, stainless and high alloy materials, to an extreme level of precision, according to contract specifications and blueprints. Responsible for leading and directing others in this fabrication process.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Read and interpret all types of drawings and sketches, lay out and assemble with speed and accuracy and with minimal aid of supervision.
- Identify structural steel shapes, cut to length, lay out and fit up welded or bolted detail, show weld sizes, piece marks, direction marks, etc.
- Develop, bend, roll, build up, and assemble various types of plate assemblies and structures.
- Work with supervisor to organize and direct crew.
- Ability to work to a build plan based on drawings, job procedure manuals, and applicable codes.
- Has latitude to self-direct for best practice and throughput.
- Responsible for maintaining established schedules.
Might have knowledge in working with one of the following items but not required:
- Working knowledge of shipboard machinery (i.e., valves and actuators, variety of pumps, gears and gear boxes, winches, heat exchangers, bearings and shafting, rudder systems, field machining) pertaining to machine shop repairs.
- Propulsion basics including variable pitch props.
- Pumps - types and mechanical seals.
- Steam systems.
- Underwater hull machinery, including bearings.
- Blowers, winches, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
- Shipboard systems including condensers, heat exchangers, fuel, lube oil, and cooling.
- Knowledge of overboard and suction ship valves. (Disassembly, clean, lap and blue)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Ability to provide direction to helpers assigned to the project.
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions regarding daily functions, safety rules and regulations, and possible hazardous conditions.
- Ability to communicate with and instruct team members on the project.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Minimum five years of welding/fabrication experience or completed apprentice program.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Pass weld test prior to employment.
- Position will require the ability to join local union # 516 within 30 days of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to lift, carry 60 lbs., or maneuver difficult objects with assistance of mechanical means or additional manpower.
- Must be able to lift 4 ft., 60 lb. spool of wire and load welding machine.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, kneel, twist, pull, push, grip, and climb.
- Capable of working from ladders and scaffolding.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
May be exposed to excessive noise, welding gases and fumes, and varying weather conditions. Proper protective equipment will be provided as necessary.
