The Head of Business Development, Global and US Energy is a member of the US Marketing and Business Development (MBD) team and will work closely with other global and regional MBD team members to ensure cross-practice coordination on client engagement initiatives targeting the energy sector. In addition to strategic advice and direction, this position will also provide tactical support on global and US initiatives involving multiple practices.
We advise many of the largest corporations and investors across the energy sector on complex, high-stakes and multi-jurisdictional transactions, projects and disputes. We are looking for a candidate who has a strong understanding of the energy sector terms and concepts, ideally from a global law firm environment; someone who can quickly build rapport with key leaders and team members and has the confidence and insight to take a view of direction on behalf of stakeholders.
The position reports into the US Business Development Director and has an informal reporting line to the Senior Director, Central Services. The position will ideally be based in Houston.
The principal components of the role are:
- In conjunction with the global and regional sector leaders, develop plans comprised of business development, marketing and communications initiatives to deliver on the business priorities of expanding relationships, building brand profile, and realizing revenue generation.
- Liaise with regional Energy business development team members to assist and advise on initiatives targeting the energy sector, and in particular the oil & gas, power, LNG, hydrogen and CCUS market segments. Lead US initiatives targeting same and involving multiple practice teams.
- Assist and advise the regional Energy business development and central bid teams with any energy-related bids being led outside the US. Provide strategic input on approach and team formations based on sector/client knowledge; review and edit content where necessary. Lead US energy-related bids that involve multiple practice teams.
- Monitor panel appointments, analyze client financials and curate market intelligence on client organizations, industry participants and sector trends to enhance market engagement and drive realization of opportunities presented.
- Support the firm's Energy Transition Global Strategic Initiative (GSI) marketing and business development initiatives, including marketing campaigns, thought leadership, events and internal programs to promote the firm's presence. Act as US liaison for ESG initiatives.
- In coordination with regional Energy business development team members, oversee energy-related submissions for global awards and league tables. Lead US submissions with energy-related categories involving multiple practices.
- Coordinate contributions and input into business development systems for supporting initiatives such as bids, events, client intelligence, experience statement compilation, league table and legal directory submissions.
- Work with Client Relationship Managers supporting client teams to provide strategic input, align plans and coordinate the management of sector opportunities with global Enterprise and US Priority program energy clients.
- Plan and manage internal communications and meetings for the effective transfer of sector information and competitive intelligence among lawyers in the sector worldwide and the wider global Energy business development teams.
Skills and Experience Required
- Ten or more years of relevant experience in a professional services or a relevant energy sector environment; ideally with large law firm experience.
- Demonstrates a deep understanding of business development strategy in a global professional services organization; possesses solid business acumen and experience in analyzing business and legal trends and developing programs, as well as the ability to synthesize complex information.
- Experience of delivering cross-border business development and marketing campaigns using the full marketing mix, working with international business development staff.
- Proactive, innovative business development professional with excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills. Ability to create engagement and manage expectations.
- Proven organizational skills and multi-tasking abilities.
- Strong writing and editorial skills; hands-on experience using all programs under the Microsoft Suite (including direct experience with PowerPoint and advanced functions within Excel).
- Experience with CRM and experience management tools a plus.
- Excellent project management skills and experience within a virtual team environment.
- Confident, persuasive and assertive; capable of building trust amongst the partnership and wider stakeholder community.
- Relevant degree and/or professionally recognized marketing or communications qualification.
