Job Summary
The Associate General Counsel is a critical role in providing legal expertise in support of the Property and Casualty business of Group 1001. This role requires having a strong background in property and casualty insurance, regulatory and compliance, reinsurance, claims, and contracts.
The Associate General Counsel works under the supervision of the Chief Legal Officer of the Clear Spring Property and Casualty Group and will assist in managing the legal needs of the Company and provide advice and counsel to all its various departments.
Main Accountabilities
- Develop and execute the Company’s legal strategy, aligning it with overall business goals and objectives;
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts and agreements, including vendor contracts, distribution partner agreements, reinsurance contracts, and other agreements.
- Ensure the Company’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
- Provide legal support to claims adjusters on various legal issues, including claims processes and insurance coverage;
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to understand their legal needs and provide strategic guidance;
- Draft responses to state insurance department complaints;
- Conduct legal research of appropriate laws, regulations, and standards applicable to the Company;
- Respond promptly to requests for legal advice from various business areas while performing thorough legal analysis and presenting legal recommendations for resolution of issues;
- Manage, from a legal perspective, the accounts receivable process;
- Assist in managing the agency contracting process;
- Assist with Company’s compliance with privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulations; and
- Provide guidance on necessary adjustments in operations resulting from changes in laws and regulations.
Qualifications
- JD degree required
- 6+ years of legal experience working in, or representing, the insurance industry is required
- Property and casualty experience, especially workers’ compensation, is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal business people.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound legal judgments and provide practical, business-oriented solutions to complex legal issues
- Process-oriented mindset, with proven ability to meet deadlines and be responsive to internal client requests.
