Senior Director, Head of Protein and Bioanalytical Solutions
Pfizer is seeking a Senior Director to lead the Protein and Bioanalytical Sciences (PBS) Research team. This multidisciplinary team is at the forefront of creating protein reagents, antibodies, and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) for both preclinical discovery research and exploratory toxicology studies. The PBS team responsibilities include the biophysical characterization of biologics, drug formulation, stability testing of new therapeutic compositions, and the bioanalytical assessment of ADC payload release and cellular deposition.
The appointed leader will drive a dynamic and collaborative team, focusing on expanding technological capabilities to enhance the capacity and efficiency of key material delivery, crucial for advancing the discovery of novel ADCs aimed at cancer treatment. As a strategic and operational cornerstone, the PBS team leader will collaborate with other senior members of the ADC Discovery Research Group to build and drive Pfizer's ADC strategy and advance Pfizer's preclinical pipeline.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead a team of 30+ scientists including PhD level
- Accountable for appropriate resourcing and timely delivery of requested materials and data to enable efficient workflows
- Create and manage prioritization efforts of sub-teams within the PBS group to ensure optimal portfolio progression and scientific rigor
- Develop the strategy for PBS to improve capacity and efficiency of platform technologies through innovation and application of new technologies, including automation, external capabilities, and collaborations
- Leverage new technologies and existing bioanalytical approaches to characterize protein biologics and ADC mechanisms of action
- Work closely with Research and external departments to balance priorities between clinical-stage programs and pre-IND programs, with seamless transfer of knowledge and processes from research to the Pharmaceutical Sciences team
- Provide supervision and mentorship of individuals in the team, establishing the technical vision, implementation of new technologies, and enabling personal growth of team members
- Promote a culture of professionalism and collaboration focused on patient outcomes in alignment with company goals and values
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related discipline
- Minimum 15 years post Ph.D. related oncology or chemistry experience in the industry, including technical and scientific experience in drug discovery and preclinical development
- Expertise in ADC synthesis, including protein generation, small molecule synthesis, biochemical conjugation, and in vitro and in vivo molecule stability characterization
- Deep experience building, leading, and directly managing large teams, capable of giving feedback, coach, mentor, and develop employees
- Demonstrated track record in collaborative research in ADC Oncology drug discovery programs with strong business acumen and communication skills
- Ability to collaborate across teams and a variety of disciplines to create and communicate scientific strategy and priorities
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior experience of scaling and process improvement in a high-throughput production environment, experience in lean six sigma a plus
- Strong track record of scientific accomplishments in the industry as evidenced by publications or other equivalent achievements
- Experience getting results through creativity and unique problem-solving
- A leader who uses data-driven science and metrics to reinforce decision-making
