VP, Operations, Step Up Tutoring
Location: California, Remote
Start Date: July, 2024
Application Deadline: May 31, 2024
Background
For generations, families with economic means have used tutors to help their children get ahead; we believe this should be available to all - not just those whose parents can pay for it.
The pandemic took a devastating toll on students already impacted by opportunity gaps, and many school districts have invested in providing tutoring in response. However, these efforts are reaching only a fraction of those who need it. Meanwhile, there are 15 million low-income elementary and middle students in the US and 12 million of them lack proficiency in reading and math.
That’s where Step Up comes in. We believe there is tremendous collective will to support our kids alreadywithinour communities. We unlock this potential by recruiting and training college students and community volunteers to serve as tutors and mentors to children, working one-to-one.
Step Up Tutoring was founded in 2020 in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District to provide virtual tutoring and mentorship to elementary school students in under-resourced communities. We have provided over 100K hours of tutoring to over 3K students, and we now work with five district and charter partners to provide tutoring during the school day, after school, and at home. We partner with colleges and universities across California to provide work-based learning opportunities for college students via Federal Work-Study and CA for All College Corps and build pipelines into teaching careers.
Our innovative math virtual tutoring program has shown promising results, our literacy program is launching this fall, and our tutor training model has received national recognition. With strong partnerships and a unique human capital model in place, we are now poised to expand our operations, reach, and impact.
