Job Responsibilities:

Manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities and operations of Golden’s state-certified Water Quality Laboratory.
Plans, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of water quality laboratory personnel.
Plans and implements sampling, data gathering, and special testing programs to evaluate and solve varied water quality issues.
Maintains the state certification of the laboratory.
Represents the City in partnerships and efforts to protect source water and watershed.
Maintains and improves data management and reporting.
Calibrates, maintains, and monitors various laboratory instruments.
Investigates water complaints from customers and devises corrective action when required.
Oversees laboratory budgets, inventory, and purchasing oversight of laboratory staff.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Responsible for supervision of all laboratory staff. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university with major course work in chemistry, bacteriology, biology, or related field and minimum 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 1 year direct supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge of water treatment chemistry and processes required. Knowledge of Safe Drinking Water Act.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid driver's license and good driving record. State of Colorado Drinking Water Operator Certificate preferred.

Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and laboratory procedures.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Physical Demands:
The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment:
The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
