Job Responsibilities:
- Manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities and operations of Golden’s state-certified Water Quality Laboratory.
- Plans, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of water quality laboratory personnel.
- Plans and implements sampling, data gathering, and special testing programs to evaluate and solve varied water quality issues.
- Maintains the state certification of the laboratory.
- Represents the City in partnerships and efforts to protect source water and watershed.
- Maintains and improves data management and reporting.
- Calibrates, maintains, and monitors various laboratory instruments.
- Investigates water complaints from customers and devises corrective action when required.
- Oversees laboratory budgets, inventory, and purchasing oversight of laboratory staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Responsible for supervision of all laboratory staff. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university with major course work in chemistry, bacteriology, biology, or related field and minimum 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 1 year direct supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge of water treatment chemistry and processes required. Knowledge of Safe Drinking Water Act.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid driver's license and good driving record. State of Colorado Drinking Water Operator Certificate preferred.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and laboratory procedures.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Physical Demands:
The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment:
The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
