Job Description Summary:
Responsible for operational management of assigned unit, supervision of assigned unit personnel, and utilization of the nursing process and age-specific criteria in delivery of patient care. Conducts ongoing patient care evaluations. Under the general direction of the Vice-President of Hospital Services and/or the Administrative Director, has 24 hours, 7 days a week responsibility for overall management of a nursing unit; makes decisions that require expert clinical judgment; and collaborates with physicians, families, and other departments. Prepares, submits, and manages within approved annual budget. Employee is subject to call back as required by the hospital.
Responsibilities:
- Assures patient care management through utilization of the nursing process and age-specific criteria.
- Selects and manages nursing staff for assigned unit.
- Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
- Assures continuing education of the staff.
- Prepares and manages personnel and equipment budgets.
- Assures unit compliance with all regulatory agency requirements.
- Directs Quality Improvement activities to ensure quality of patient care and compliance with Nursing Standards.
- Evaluates, interprets, and implements hospital and nursing policies and procedures and recommends changes as required.
- Represents the unit at interdepartmental hospital functions and directs the interrelationships between the unit, other hospital departments, and the community at large.
- Recognizes and participates in activities that foster personal and professional growth.
- Endorses and promotes Guest Excellence/Patient Satisfaction and the institutional and nursing philosophy and goals of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
- Develops and maintains a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the nursing unit.
- Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Completion of a bachelor’s degree in nursing is required. MSN preferred.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee. Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually. BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position. Certification in specialty area preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Proficiency in current practices and techniques in specific areas of clinical expertise as acquired through clinical experience. Previous management and supervisor experience preferred.
