Summary:
The South Dakota Public Health Laboratory is centrally located in Pierre, SD and provides medical microbiology, environmental chemistry, and forensic testing services. The SDPHL is currently seeking a MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or a Sr. Microbiologist to join our team. The Medical Microbiology Section provides bacteriology, molecular, mycology, mycobacteriology, serology, virology, and special pathogens testing. The incumbent will work closely with a team of scientists to provide clinical and public health microbiology testing for clients throughout the state of South Dakota. Duties will include diagnostic testing in a high-complexity environment, data analysis and reporting, and client relations.

Licenses and Certifications:
- MLS(ASCP) certification or equivalent is desired
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology per 42 CFR 493.1489.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Previous microbiology testing experience is preferred but recent graduates will be considered.
- Training and/or experience in high complexity testing.
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations and the ability to follow laboratory policies and procedures.
Knowledge of:
- Clinical and public health microbiology
- Laboratory biosafety
- Quality management
- CLIA regulations
- Performing clinical and public health microbiology testing in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures
- Maintaining a clean and organized testing environment
- Collaborating with the SDPHL medical microbiology team, epidemiology staff, and other healthcare professionals
- Operating high complexity instruments including maintenance checks as required
- Contributing to test validation and implementation
- Participating in client outreach and education
- Participating in on-site and off-site training relevant to day-to-day duties
Ability to:
- Perform various bacteriological, virological, serological, and parasitological tests and analyses
- Follow specific testing procedures
- Work safely with dangerous and contagious materials and specimens
- Operate scientific equipment and computers
- Perform quality assurance
- Identify reference specimens
- Determine which biochemical will identify a specimen
- Identify and maintain appropriate cell cultures
- Identify species of microorganisms
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Perform various tests, adapt techniques as required, and perform complex computations
- Prepare scientifically accurate and thorough reports
