Summary:
The South Dakota Public Health Laboratory is centrally located in Pierre, SD and provides medical microbiology, environmental chemistry and forensic testing services. The SDPHL is currently seeking a MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) or a Microbiologist to join our team. The Medical Microbiology Section provides bacteriology, molecular, mycology, mycobacteriology, serology, virology, and special pathogens testing. The incumbent will work closely with a team of scientists to provide clinical and public health microbiology testing for clients throughout the state of South Dakota. Duties will include diagnostic testing in a high-complexity environment, data analysis and reporting, and client relations.
Licenses and Certifications:
MLT(ASCP) certification or equivalent is desired
Associate's degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology per 42 CFR 493.1489.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Minimum of an Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a Bachelors degree in Microbiology
Previous microbiology testing experience is preferred but recent graduates will be considered
Training and/or experience in high complexity testing
Knowledge of CLIA regulations and the ability to follow laboratory policies and procedures
Knowledge of:
Knowledge of clinical and public health microbiology
Knowledge of laboratory biosafety
Knowledge of quality management
Knowledge of CLIA regulations
Safely perform clinical and public health microbiology testing in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures
Maintain a clean and organized testing environment
Interact collaboratively with the SDPHL medical microbiology team, epidemiology staff, and other healthcare professionals
Operate high complexity instruments including maintenance checks as required
Contribute to test validation and implementation
Contribute to client outreach and education
Participate in on-site and off-site training relevant to day-to-day duties
Ability to:
perform various bacteriological, virological, serological, and parasitological tests and analyses;
follow specific testing procedures;
work safely with dangerous and contagious materials and specimens;
operate scientific equipment;
operate computers;
perform quality assurance;
establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
make and record scientific observations accurately;
perform necessary mathematical calculations.
