Job Title: Laboratory Section Leader
SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Assistant Director of Pathology
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Ensures staff has knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to complete job responsibilities.
- Evaluates staff for competency.
- Schedules staff ensuring adequate coverage.
- Monitors equipment maintenance, including service contracts to ensure routine and preventative maintenance is done according to schedule.
- Assists Laboratory Director in maintaining 100% productivity.
- Controls overtime in section.
- Controls cost as related to section needs.
- Assists Laboratory Director in maintaining budgets.
- Participates in CAP proficiency testing program and attains acceptable proficiency results.
- Participates in various hospital committees.
- Reviews test results to ensure quality control.
- Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Coordinates and conducts education and training programs for medical technology students and personnel.
- Assists in purchases of laboratory equipment and supplies; maintains complete inventory and records of supplies used in section.
- Assigns workers to duties and oversees performance of tests in fields of microbiology, chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, serology and immunohematology.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; Successful completion of an internship in medical technology.
- Minimum of two years of clinical laboratory experience.
- Louisiana State License as CLS-Generalist; National Certification- MT(ASCP) or equivalent.
- Computer skills; Operation of Laboratory equipment/instruments.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and general public.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Mental competence and alertness, dexterity and accuracy of physical movements; clear, concise, pleasant speaking abilities; accurate hearing is essential; visual acuity is a must; stability of emotional make up is essential.
