Job Summary:
The Certified Surgical First Assist PRN involves delivery of care based upon the supervision and coordination of nursing personnel activities according to the hospital's policies and procedures. In addition to the Perioperative role, this position will prepare operating rooms for surgery using appropriate techniques. Provides technical services and assists in the operating room, Endoscopy Suite, and Sterile Processing as assigned and directed.

Qualifications:
- Required: Graduate of an approved specific discipline OR successful completion of a surgical assistant training program during the applicant's service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
- Required: Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience.
- Required: Certification from one of the listed issuers below:
- CSFA - Certified Surgical First Assistant - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- CSA - Certified Surgical Assistant - National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA)
- CSA - Certified Surgical Assistant - National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)
- If current employee and employed by VUMC prior to 2010, no certification is required.
- If graduate of surgical assistant armed forces training program, no certification is required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure.
- Knowledge of sterile technique and maintenance of sterility of surgical field.
- Ability to circulate all operative cases independently.
- Ability to care for patients in PACU in the immediate postoperative period.
- Completes perioperative record accurately and completely.
- Charges accurately for items used in the operating room.
- Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
- Opens sterile supplies and sets up for procedures.
- Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Monitors and restocks supplies.
