Title: Sealer of Weights and Measures
Supervisor: Sealer of Weights and Measures works under the supervision of the Executive Director and Senior Sealer of Weights and Measures
Salary: Maximum salary up to $29,500, contingent upon qualifications
Summary:
The Sealer of Weights and Measures is responsible for testing all Point-of-Sale measuring devices used in business to ensure compliance with state and local laws and regulations for the municipalities of Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Littleton, Lowell, Pepperell, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, and Westford. This includes, but is not limited to, fuel station dispensers, scales found in markets, pharmacies, dispensaries, quarries, home heating fuel trucks, heavy capacity truck scales, conducting price verifications, and handling consumer complaints. The Sealer must receive Certification by the Massachusetts Division of Standards within one year of being appointed.
Essential Functions:
- Work under the supervision of the Executive Director and Senior Sealer of Weights and Measures.
- Work in accordance with applicable provisions of Massachusetts General Laws.
- Conduct fieldwork primarily, with some office work required to process reports and coordinate invoicing. Fieldwork involves exposure to inclement weather and requires access to gas pumps, truck & quarry scales, and home heating fuel oil trucks for sealing.
- Perform routine work of a technical nature requiring exercise of judgment in ensuring compliance with proper standards and the enforcement of pertinent laws and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of state laws, rules, and regulations governing established standards for weights and measures, scanners, and motor fuel licenses.
- Knowledge of the operation of various weighing devices.
- Ability to enforce state laws, local ordinances, and other regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Inspectional and/or general scale experience a plus but not required.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with business employees/owners and the public.
- Skill in operating equipment required for the position.
- Experience working with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word, office scanner & printer.
- The ability to work in multiple communities around the Greater Lowell region.
- A valid driver’s license and personal vehicle are required with the ability to haul gasoline and diesel testing equipment as well as weights of various units (up to 250 pounds on a cart) used to test scales.
Physical Requirements:
- Moderate physical effort is demanded when conducting inspections.
- Ability to lift and/or carry weights up to and including 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, and kneel approximately 75% of the workday.
