I. Major Responsibilities:
- Serves as the administrative authority responsible for the provision of quality nursing care and the smooth function of all nursing units on an assigned shift, working collaboratively with physicians, administrators, and other patient care staff. Directs all bed management/flow activities.
- Responsible for leading the bed management and appropriate, efficient bed placement. Actively manages patient flow to ensure reduced boarding time in ED.
- Responsible for monitoring the quality of nursing services. Receives reports throughout the shift.
- Performs rounds throughout the shift to assure efficient patient flow and high quality, safe patient care.
- Addresses and resolves urgent concerns, patient and family complaints occurring during the shift; and notifies the appropriate Nurse Manager as necessary.
- Coordinates the smooth transition of operations upon shift changes. Receives reports from the off-going Nurse Supervisor about patient and staffing concerns and provides a report to the on-coming Nurse supervisor.
- Assures that proper staffing is in place. Coordinates efforts with the appropriate Nurse Managers to determine the optimal allocation of staff per shift on each unit. Reviews schedules, receives employee call-offs, replaces for absences for upcoming shifts, etc.
- Provides advice and counsel to nursing staff for emergencies and in medical management, crisis and behavior management techniques.
- Leads appropriate action in response to emergency situations. Coordinates with other functions, such as engineering, maintenance, and security. Notifies Nursing Directors or Senior Management in a timely fashion when appropriate.
- Maintains a current knowledge of trends and techniques in the field of nursing and specialized areas applicable to HealthAlliance Hospital.
- Directs staff response to emergencies, such as severe weather, fire, etc.
- Notifies Nursing Managers of assigned staff learning needs.
- Assists Nursing Managers in completing performance evaluations for nurses on assigned shift.
- Addresses urgent employee issues and administers appropriate personnel action in the event of urgent employee discipline problems.
- Interacts with the electronic staffing and scheduling system.
- Utilizes the electronic solutions including the time and attendance system, productivity reporting, and acuity modules.
- Coordinates the replenishment of supplies during the shift as necessary.
- Participates in process improvement and system process improvement initiatives.
- Functions as a resource to staff related to the electronic time and attendance system.
- Functions as a super-user for various systems including the electronic medical record.
- Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices, and reads and responds to emails on a regular basis.
Standard Supervisor Level Responsibilities:
- Supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
- Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
- Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
- Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
- Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
- Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
- Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
- Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
- Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Ensures compliance with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
- Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.
II. Position Qualifications: All responsibilities are essential job functions.
License/Certification/Education Required:
- Graduate of a recognized school of Nursing
- Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse License
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
Experience/Skill Required:
- Minimum five (5) years of clinical nursing experience and demonstrated skill in a team leader role
- Ability to supervise a nursing shift at a busy community hospital
- Excellent knowledge of nursing practices and regulatory and legislative requirements
- Good problem-solving, planning, and organizing skills
- Ability to use computer-based nurse scheduling systems, and to use standard business office applications software, such as MS Office.
Unless certification, licensure, or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
