Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum): $29.403 - $36.754 - $44.104
The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position. The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.
What You Will Do
This position is responsible for supporting Pharmacy's Information and Automation Technology Program with an emphasis on managing Pyxis Systems. Pyxis Systems responsibilities include, but are not limited to, being a site expert on Pyxis System setup and daily operational integrity. The Pharmacy Technician Informatics Coordinator will serve as a facilitator and contributor to Pharmacy's Information and Automation Technology Program by fulfilling technology support duties for current and future technologies.
Required Qualifications
- 3 Years Hospital pharmacy environment or equivalent experience.
- Experience with Pyxis Systems or equivalent
- California Pharmacy Technician License (TCH) - CA State Board of Pharmacy - REQUIRED
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 Years Hospital pharmacy environment or equivalent experience.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board - PREFERRED
Essential Functions
- Customer service: Answers phone in accordance with Sharp Healthcare principles and behavioral standards. Fosters positive relationships through consistent, respectful, professional interactions with customers. Responds to requests in a timely, caring manner that is consistent with Sharp behavior standards (i.e., attitude).
- Database monitoring: Monitor refill, stock out, loading, unloading, ordered meds not loaded to maximize efficiency to avoid stock-outs. Monitor the accuracy of charges and credits to verify the completion of the billing cycle. Utilize Pyxis console, C-II Safe, and Pyxis Consultant reports to identify potential usage irregularities, forward necessary information to pharmacy and nursing management for their assessment, and assist with further review as warranted. Ensure that all pertinent reports are filed for future reference, if needed, and archive data to disk for future reference.
- Documentation: Ensure application documentation is current, accurate, and available. Application documentation includes, but is not limited to, workflows, data diagrams, design plans, project management logs, disaster recovery plans, and reference documents. Develop test plans, training material, and guidelines. Assist with developing or updating policies and procedures.
- Internal communications: Clearly communicate goals and instructions to other staff members, including handoffs between shifts (written/oral). Participate in staff orientation and resident/student training programs. Effectively identify and troubleshoot issues, as demonstrated by effective problem solving, prioritization of issues with respect to level of significance and impact to patient care, safety, workflow, cost, and communication. Apply the appropriate Sharp HealthCare policies and procedures when faced with complex situations. Effectively evaluate existing workflow issues and direct daily workload to achieve optimum efficiency and maximize resource utilization as business needs require. Attend and participate in staff meetings or reviews staff meeting communications. Read work-related email at a minimum on assigned workdays.
- Medication distribution services: Review, recommend, and implement modifications to the daily routine as necessary to optimize the use of the system. Perform extensive monitoring of the system to measure its overall performance and use. Proactively communicate the status of Pyxis operational integrity to the pharmacy and nursing staffs. Assist with the selection of appropriate inventory for each MedStation. Perform periodic review of the inventory par levels and for expiration dates.
- Medication safety and use: Participate in surveillance initiatives such as Pyxis override report monitoring, anesthesia controlled substance audits, medication safety event reporting, etc. Proactively identify potential medication safety improvement opportunities such as look-alike, sound-alike medication storage and packaging issues, delivery/storage/security related issues, inventory management issues, etc. Proactively participate in the development of medication safety initiatives to prevent occurrence or reoccurrence of medication safety events. Demonstrate awareness of medication safety communications delivered by pharmacy management and safe medication practice pharmacist.
- Monitor Pyxis activity: Act as the primary contact for the issuance of passwords to ongoing users and new users. Maintain accurate documentation of user access according to established policies and procedures. Provide oversight, monitor, reconcile, and report nursing med access override issues to pharmacists for their follow-up. Work with Pharmacy Clinical Supervisor (or equivalent) and Safe Medication Practice Pharmacist (or equivalent) to build and maintain clinical data category (speed bumps) and Pyxis alerts. Provide reports as needed. Assist with build and maintenance of 'trigger' reports.
- Pyxis technology management: Act as the primary contact with Pyxis customer support. Communicate with Pyxis representatives about any upcoming ADT/Interface Software changes, nursing unit moves, etc., that may affect the proper operation of the Pyxis system. Proactively seek and respond to feedback from pharmacy and nursing staffs. Assist with the implementation of new units or services throughout the healthcare system.
- Technology and automation management: Participate in new technology evaluations and implementations. Optimize hardware and software to support operational needs. Maintain quality assurance, system integrity, and customer satisfaction for assigned technology or automation. Ensure that all changes to applications and technologies are made using existing change management methodologies to protect system performance, availability, and integrity. Collaborate with site and corporate pharmacy, IS team, and vendor to ensure all changes work in concert with the application software and associated technologies.
- Reports and audits: Perform application extracts to support organizational, department, or individual data needs. Compile, analyze, and manipulate data to best provide information to the intended audience. Utilize custom reports to address needs not provided through standard reporting tools.
- Training development: Assist with training and evaluating pharmacy techs and pharmacists on loading and refilling procedures, and how to provide support to nursing to resolve drawer failures and other issues. Keep abreast of all current and developing technologies by attending Pyxis related educational opportunities. Provide ongoing and systematic educational programs and opportunities for pharmacy, nursing, RCP, and physician staff. Actively participate in Pyxis Task Force.
