Job Title: Accountant
Job Location: Energy Center (Birmingham, AL) or 30 Allen Plaza Atlanta, GA

Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- 5+ years of accounting experience
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate conversations on complex accounting topics
- Ability to research technical/complex accounting issues
- Extremely strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with accounting, auditing, various non-financial functional areas, and various levels of staff and management
- Understanding of FERC reporting requirements
- Knowledge of FASB and SEC accounting and reporting standards and requirements
Highly Preferred: Advanced degree or CPA, and Technology and/or Utility accounting experience
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as the Chair/Lead of the Technology Accounting Review Committee.
- Research and provide sound guidance on technical software and hardware accounting and reporting issues for Southern Company Services and its subsidiaries.
- Assist with accounting conversations as appropriate between the SCS Technology Organization and System Accounting Research, Corporate Accounting, Budgeting & Reporting, and Property Accounting teams.
- Evaluate the impact of new accounting standards and participate in the adoption of the new standards.
- Document and communicate complex accounting decisions and cost recovery mechanisms for technology projects.
Job Experience and Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required
- Advanced Degree or CPA is preferred
- Five years of accounting experience is required
- Technology and/or Utility accounting experience is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate conversations on complex accounting topics is required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of FASB and SEC accounting and reporting standards and requirements
- Ability to research technical/complex accounting issues
- Extremely strong oral and written communications skills with the ability to understand and explain complex accounting issues to a varied audience
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with accounting, auditing, various non-financial functional areas, and varying levels of staff and management
- Understanding of FERC reporting requirements is a plus
