Area Business Consultant - Grocery Retail

Purpose
The Area Business Consultant (Focus Stores) is responsible for counseling opportunity stores and/or non-compliant Retail Partners and their Store Managers in all phases of retail operations. Influence Retail Partner’s business profitability with a focus on top line growth. Advise Retail Partners in the execution of SIAB (Store in a Box) merchandising plans and techniques to optimize store financial success. Promote excellent performance and the integrity of the Save A Lot program and ensure brand standards are adhered to. Lead through influencing, teaching, coaching, and taking direct action to improve the store performance of assigned Retail Partners. Obtain Retail Partners support on all company programs and initiatives. Provide leadership with feedback on Retail Partner concerns and operations including action planning with follow up. Act as an advocate and facilitator for organizational support to Retail Partners.
Responsibilities
- Drive profitable sales with a strong emphasis on “PCR” and “Share of Sales” through direction or influence by ensuring Retail Partner store conditions, customer service levels, merchandising standards, and purchases are compliant with Save A Lot standards.
- Conduct training of SIAB (Store in a Box) program and implementation including instilling the ongoing practices and procedures post-implementation. Actively work with Retail Partner to improve store sales, purchases, store standards and food safety compliance. Identify regional/ethnic (localization) assortment voids and implement these assortment changes to drive wholesale and retail sales.
- Identify “shrink” opportunities in all departments as well as the ability to establish solutions to reduce/eliminate.
- Continuously work to influence Retail Partners on modernizing existing store facilities and help execute store remodels.
- Develop operational business plans to drive sales and/or profits.
- Review load optimization planning to maximize trucking efficiencies and minimize costs.
- Consult with Retail Partners to identify root-cause opportunities as well as develop actionable plans to remedy the identified opportunity(s).
- Cultivate productive, influential working relationships with Retail Partners that result in improved business Retail Partner profitability.
- Guide financially underperforming Retail Partners to establish best practice routines and drive profitable perishable departments.
- Collaborate with other Area Business Consultants and Retail Partners to gather and share best operational practices.
- Evaluate and measure competitor impacts to the region and its stores. Utilize resources to build action plans to address competitor activity, pricing, regionality and ethnic item assortment opportunities.
- Actively work with Retail Partners to qualify/disqualify DSD product based on current unit sales/item duplication to drive PCR and warehouse purchases.
- Act as lead communication liaison to our Retail Partners ensuring active listening and committed action.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent retail/grocery work experience.
- Meat and Produce operations experience required.
- Multi-unit management and in-store merchandising experience required.
- 3-5 years of management experience or leading large projects preferred.
- Ability to create and utilize business analytics reports supporting data-driven decisions.
- Ability to interpret a P&L as well as the ability to establish insights and actions to improve.
- Ability to influence others through leadership without direct authority.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments or projects.
- Ability to coach, teach and train the responsible ABC’s for each struggling RP location to ensure a smooth and successful handoff transition.
- Results-oriented and data-driven with demonstrated ability to utilize all of the tools/reports available to develop insights and actions.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills, strong customer focus.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have strong computer skills and be proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to interact with and present to senior management and outside resources.
- Must be a strong learner, think independently, and demonstrate critical thinking.
- Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel which may include weekends and evenings, as needed. Extensive travel will be required for this position (90%).
- Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
- Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at a desk or computer terminal.
- Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment in the course of a normal workday.
- Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in completion of job duties.
