Overview:
Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care on crisis units. Responsible for the delivery of patient care through a multidisciplinary approach. Patient treatment planning is through an interdisciplinary approach consisting of patient staffing’s and special care conferences. Assist with designated management duties in a leadership role. The patients served are patients of adults in need of the supportive setting of crisis services. Program care is focused on continuity, accountability, relationship based and evidence-based services that reflects a commitment to compassionate, competent care delivered by the interdisciplinary team. Care is provided through a therapeutic relationship with the patient and supportive natural supports. A spirit of inquiry is encouraged and supported. Evidence-driven protocols are utilized to assure reliable and consistent care.

Responsibilities:
- Admission assessment includes completion of the comprehensive evaluation of the mental status – patient’s mood, affect, thought content and psychosocial issues.
- Initiates care plan updates and documents on the progress towards goals per unit policy.
- Maintains competence in performing procedures involved with the management of aggressive or potentially aggressive patients.
- Leads by coaching, training, and oversight of the medication management and certified medication aid programs for crisis services.
- Oversees the care of medications in crisis services.
- Is knowledgeable regarding managed care implications – precertification and utilization review procedures.
- Assists with crisis services placement, where applicable.
- Provides consultation regarding behavioral health issues as needed to other departments.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team and other agencies.
- Provides consultation regarding behavioral health or medical issues as needed to staff/departments.
- Assists management with performance appraisal of unit staff.
- Assists with designated management duties.
- Assists with coaching/counseling staff as appropriate.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria:

- Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
- Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
- Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Graduate of accredited nursing program
- BSN Degree preferred
Experience:
- One (1) year of mental health clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
- Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
- Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.
