Summary of Duties
As an employee working in the Self-Sufficiency Program (SSP), you will have an opportunity to provide resources and services to help people move out of poverty and toward whole well-being. Programs include food benefits, cash assistance, childcare assistance, services for domestic violence survivors, resources for refugees and support for youth experiencing homelessness.
As a Family Coach, you will be:
- A part of Family stability/Family preservation projects.
- Responsible for providing person-centered, strength-based practice to assist families transitioning into a state of independence through collaboration and partnership within the agency and the community.
- Engaging families in many different ways, these include but are not limited to: individual and family assessment; identification of goals that are attainable and provide a glide path off state assistance; identification of individual and family strengths; collaboration with other state agencies, and collaboration with community organizations and resources. Also, determine eligibility for programs, as necessary.
- Negotiating coaching contracts with the adults in the home; utilizing the continuum of Jobs activities, supporting both the adults needs as well as the family's needs to attain the goal of employment. It is essential for the Family Coach to evaluate employability readiness, provide meaningful provider referrals, promote services, and motivate the adult towards employment.
- Developing and maintaining a base knowledge of employment services; contractors; and community services to meet the employment needs of the family. This knowledge must span various levels of employment readiness including limited work experience, criminal backgrounds, career paths from entry level on up, etc.
- Actively seeking to provide culturally appropriate services where individuals are treated respectfully, compassionately, and effectively in a manner that recognizes, affirms and values the worth of children, individuals, families and communities, protecting and preserving the dignity of each. This includes: culture, language; national origin; class; race; age; ethnic background; disability; stages of development; religion; gender; sexual orientation and other differences or diversity factors.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a closely related field; OR
- A bachelor's degree in any field AND one year of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing); OR
- An associate degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science or a closely related field AND two years of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing); OR
- Three years of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing).
Essential Attributes
We are looking for candidates with:
- Experience with strength-based case management and assessing customers’ strengths & service needs.
- Experience conducting community visits.
- Experience working as a team and staffing collaboratively with community partners and families.
- Experience successfully organizing work efficiently, prioritizing developing situations, managing multiple tasks with interruptions, as well as managing workloads with competing deadlines. In this role, family coaches are working with families on emergent needs and often rearrange priorities to problem solve.
- Experience initiating and maintaining relationships while working successfully with diverse populations and with individuals who may find it challenging to express themselves verbally.
- Experience maintaining professionalism and working with compassion through a trauma informed lens while serving customers and participants that may be experiencing stress, trauma, and/or domestic violence.
- Knowledge of ODHS programs and community resources and the ability to coordinate multiple parties & integrate multiple services.

Working Conditions
- Your work will be conducted in the Office and Community. Your work will have a Hybrid work format that includes office work, and some work that can be conducted remotely. You will be required to come into the office 3 (Three) days per week.
- Your typical work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). Occasionally you will need to adjust your schedule based on service need.
- You may interact with a wide range of people including some who have experienced trauma and may exhibit challenges in controlling their emotions.
- Fast-paced position that includes a high volume of individual, family, and community partner contact.
- Rarely, you may have required overnight travel to attend statewide meetings and trainings.
