Veterinary Technician
The Virginia Aquarium’s Veterinary Science & Research section is seeking a licensed Veterinary Technician with experience with a wide diversity of animals (fish, elasmobranchs, reptiles, birds, terrestrial and marine mammals) to join the veterinary team in providing medical care, including a comprehensive preventative health care program, to the Aquarium’s resident animals.
Duties:
- Assist the veterinary staff in the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions, disease, injury, and health maintenance of all animals at the Virginia Aquarium.
- Perform minor medical procedures, diagnostic tests, and carry out prescribed treatments and therapies under the direction of senior veterinary staff.
- Create and maintain accurate case documentation in the medical record keeping system (ZIMS) and other relevant databases.
- Monitor and observe the behavior and condition of animal patients, reporting appropriately to the veterinarians.
- Maintain skills for a variety of sample collection techniques, sample preparation, in-house laboratory testing, and other diagnostics tests.
- Utilize equipment such as portable digital radiograph systems, ultrasound, endoscopy, i-STAT, and therapeutic laser.
- Conduct diagnostic imaging and prepare for regular veterinary exams and rounds.
- Assist with procedures and surgeries under the supervision of veterinarians, including intubation and anesthesia monitoring.
- Calculate dosages, prepare, and administer medications, fluids, and other treatments as prescribed.
- Perform and assist with euthanasia and necropsies as directed.
- Assist in maintaining needed supplies and equipment across several Aquarium facilities.
- Develop protocols for vet staff and train other staff, volunteers, and interns.
- Ensure adherence to regulations, standards, and guidelines of OSHA, USDA, DEA, AZA, and Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine.
- Communicate regularly with the Hospital Manager and Veterinarians regarding the status of medical cases.
- Maintain quality standards through regular maintenance and cleaning activities.
- Maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions.
- Perform other job duties as assigned based on current workloads and department needs.
Work Schedule:
5 days per week, 8-hour day shifts including one weekend day per week, with potential changes seasonally. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Experience Required
MINIMUMS: Must have a current license, in good standing, to practice as a veterinary technician in Virginia. Must have or obtain a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license.
Further Comments
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in veterinary technology, animal sciences, biology, zoology, conservation, or another related field.
- Three (3) or more years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician.
- One (1) or more years working in an animal care related position at an aquarium, zoo, or wildlife facility.
- Prior experience in avian or exotic pet veterinary practice and with marine mammals.
- Knowledge and experience performing basic live animal diagnostic tests.
- Experience with public speaking or guest engagement.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and a positive attitude.

Salary: $39,328.30 - $60,958.87
