Job Role Summary
The RN Specialist- Vascular Access utilizes the Eskenazi Health Model of Care- Synergy to provide clinical care and coordination to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care needs of patients requiring vascular access. They provide the most clinically appropriate vascular access, including ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV)s, midlines, and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), consistent with evidenced based practice in collaboration with the inter-professional team.

VASCULAR ACCESS JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides patient and staff education on vascular access.
- Demonstrates ability to assess patient past and current medical history including that is pertinent in qualifying a patient as a candidate for vascular access.
- Obtains Informed Consent for PICC and midline insertions.
- Performs time out; correct patient identifier prior to initiating PICC or midline insertion.
- Demonstrates ability to perform vascular access placement maintaining aseptic technique.
- Demonstrates high level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access devices.
- Documents insertion of vascular access device.
- Completes vascular access audits.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
Judgement
- Employee may work independently under the general direction of their leader.
Associated Job Duties
- Performs all other job-related duties as assigned.
- Monitors central line blood stream infection (CLABSI) prevention bundle compliance.
Job Requirements
- Current Indiana license as a Registered Nurse.
- RN degree from a nationally accredited college or university.
- Minimum 3 years inserting peripheral IV lines.
- ACLS & BLS certification maintained.
- Must successfully complete the BD PICC insertion training program and hands-on competency review before completing orientation.
- Vascular Access Certification obtained within 18 months of hire.
Special Effort Required
- Physical stamina, considerable walking, standing, lifting/moving of patients. Ability to perform duties and effectively respond in stressful environment and situations, mentally and physically. Care or effort to avoid injury and infection.
- Must be mentally capable of processing information quickly.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs independently (patient and/or equipment including overhead).
- Must be able to push and/or pull a minimum of 50 lbs independently (patients and/or patient equipment).
- Must be able to respond immediately/move quickly to emergency situations in unit and hospital.
- Must be willing and able to wear personal protective equipment.
- Must be able to participate in CPR: Must be able to remain awake and alert at all times.
- Must demonstrate age-appropriate cognitive abilities, skills, techniques and communications that are detailed in the department/area/unit job-specific/age-specific competencies.
Responsibility
- Maintains HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations.
- Communicates effectively with a variety of healthcare disciplines.
- Evaluates and troubleshoots all forms of vascular access devices.
