POSITION SUMMARY:We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Assistant Nurse Manager.In this role, the successful candidate provides clinical leadership and management for a designated time period (shift) for a patient care unit (or clinical service in operative and ambulatory settings), consistent with the philosophy and goals of the institution, Department of Nursing, unit, or program. Assists the Nurse Manager to develop and sustain an environment of excellence in patient/family service, growth and development of staff, and to apply evidence based practice to improve patient care.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identifies, initiates investigation and proactively responds on an immediate basis to potential and actual risk management issues per standards and institutional policies. Ensures timely and appropriate reporting and follow-up. Notifies Nurse Manager and/or nursing leadership on duty depending on severity of incident.
- Supports the mission, philosophy, standards, goals and objectives of the institution, department, unit, and service line. Advance Professional Practice Model through supporting and encouraging staff participation and own involvement. Assist staff in understanding their accountability within discipline-specific scopes of practice and the core principles of Relationship-Based Care. Support adherence to organizational Service Standards. Build a sense of commitment within the unit to the departmental shared vision.
- Collaborates with Nurse Manager in the evaluation and management of nursing staff including: Demonstrates competency in use of computerized scheduling and payroll system. Guides, develops, counsels and provides written staff evaluations in accordance with established practice and performance standards.Assists with ensuring standard and regulatory compliance. Implements disciplinary measures requiring immediate action according to Personnel policy related to employee conduct. Notifies appropriate nursing leadership in a timely manner.
- Assists in facilitating a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal patient care outcomes. Observes and guides behaviors to help improve customer service relationships. Provides direct, constructive feedback to staff and colleagues as appropriate. Consults with nursing staff and patients to prevent or resolve patient care complaints.Advances nursing staffs skills in interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. Demonstrates a spirit of collaboration and effective cooperation with other departments regarding clinical activity of other units in the service and hospital.
- Adheres to service guidelines concerning sick time, vacation, personal days and other paid/unpaid leaves.
- Provides clinical leadership and support to nursing staff by:Assisting them in clinical decision-making and prioritization. Consulting with staff regarding patient-related decision making. Mentoring and coaching in development of clinical skills and specialty knowledge. Facilitating the acquisition and application of clinical knowledge, theoretical knowledge, and decision-making skills to advance professional practice. Providing ongoing feedback to improve practice and patient care.
- Provides leadership for the development implementation and evaluation of standards of practice for patient populations served. Analyzes and determines integrated care needs of patient populations. Monitors patient outcomes. Evaluates current research findings. Works within the Professional Practice structure and with professional colleagues to incorporate relevant changes into practice.
- Maintains current knowledge and skills by participating in relevant educational programs. Maintains a leadership presence in order to provide consultative assistance to staff with respect to patient care activities. Shares in staff decision making regarding daily clinical operations of the unit, including patient flow. Serves as a role model for staff in considering needs and behaviors of specific age and cultural groups within the patient population. Participates in the development, promulgation and implementation of process standards for the delivery of patient care relevant to area of practice. Mentor RN staff in delegation skills. Coordinates unit response to emergent patient and unit or clinical service events, including communicating expeditiously with other leadership and response teams.
- Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, Unit Staff and Nursing Education in identifying, addressing, and utilizing available resources to meet the learning needs of professional and ancillary staff members.Demonstrates personal mastery, models continuous learning and facilitates the learning of others. Assists in the Identification of unit specific learning needs. Serves as a clinical resource for staff; using clinical experts to advance own, and staff, knowledge. Facilitates attendance and participation by staff in educational offerings. Participates in evaluating the effectiveness of education and development activities in achieving desired outcomes.
- Guides the orientation/preceptorship of new staff thru collaboration with nurse educators, assigned preceptors and orientees. Initiates own professional development plan to improve and sustain clinical and leadership competency.
- Maintains awareness of research protocols applicable to unit, ensures knowledge of staff protects rights of patients, and participates in assessment/evaluation of outcomes. Participates and fosters staff involvement in evidence based practice and other nursing research efforts.
- Facilitates and encourage a learning environment that relies on ongoing dialogue to evaluate clinical and professional practice issues and team learning. Creates an environment for change that encourages risk-taking. Engage staff in retrospective review and analysis of critical situations and outcomes.
- Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and other nursing leadership to support the unit-based quality and performance improvement program consistent with the service and departmental plan.
- Collaborates in interdisciplinary efforts to improve health care delivery within the organization. Maintains an awareness of existing quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives within the organization, including nursing. Communicates departmental and organizational QA and PI efforts to staff. Supports staff in maintaining active involvement in the implementation of action plans and the identification of new opportunities for improvement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:To qualify you must have a current Registered Professional Nurse in New York. Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required, Master's degree preferred. A minimum of two years of clinical practice in the care of the patient population served; ability to apply nursing process toward achievement of specific outcomes in an organized fashion which addresses patient/family satisfaction. Membership in pertinent professional organizations; certification in relevant practice area preferred; physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities; provides leadership support on assigned shift with flexibility to meet leadership/administrative needs.Preferred Qualifications:Certification: In clinical specialty or Nursing Administration preferred.Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
