GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Public Health Laboratory, Microbiology Program, is searching for a dedicated and experienced HSSL11 Laboratory Supervisor to join our team as an AWEC (At-Will Employee Contract) Laboratory Supervisor. This pivotal role involves leading and managing a team of contract scientists, focusing on laboratory operations related to the testing and surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious diseases within Wyoming. The supervisor will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, and maintain rigorous quality control measures related to advanced laboratory techniques such as real-time PCR, whole genome sequencing, and bioinformatics. With a deep understanding of laboratory science and modern molecular methods, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in delivering accurate and timely laboratory results, essential for public health safety and decision-making. The position demands strong leadership skills, effective project management, and a commitment to enhancing laboratory practices, contributing significantly to public health initiatives and the state’s preparedness for emerging infectious diseases. This role not only supports the operational excellence of the laboratory but also provides valuable data and insights that inform public health strategies, reinforcing the laboratory’s mission to safeguard public health in Wyoming.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Lead and manage a team of contract laboratory scientists by handling scheduling, providing training, monitoring performance, and supporting professional development to ensure an effective and cohesive team.
- Conduct analysis of human biological samples and environmental samples to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious diseases, ensuring accuracy and reliability in testing outcomes.
- Operate and maintain highly complex laboratory equipment according to standardized testing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory standards.
- Cross-train in multiple sections of the Microbiology laboratory to provide surge capacity and coverage as necessary, enhancing flexibility and operational resilience.
- Perform other duties as assigned to assist the Wyoming Public Health Laboratory (WPHL) in achieving its grant goals and fulfilling its mission statement, contributing to the overall effectiveness and success of the laboratory.
PREFERENCES:
Preference will be given to applicants with bachelor's or master’s degree in biological, physical, or chemical science.
Preference will be given to applicants with 4+ years of clinical laboratory experience.
Preference will be given to applicants with 2+ years of supervisory experience.

- Proficiency in managing and leading teams, including the ability to motivate employees, foster a collaborative work environment, and enhance team performance.
- Exceptional written, oral, electronic, and interpersonal communication skills, enabling effective interaction with team members, stakeholders, and public health officials.
- Strong understanding of scientific principles and disciplines, relevant to microbiology and infectious disease testing, to ensure the application of appropriate methodologies and techniques.
- Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control measures, and safety protocols to maintain high standards in testing accuracy, reliability, and safety compliance.
- Working knowledge of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for managing data and workflows, and proficiency in Google Suite for documentation, communication, and collaboration.
