Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Per Diem Surgical Technologist - Ambulatory Surgery Center.
In this role, the successful candidate will work under the direction of the RN to plan the delivery of safe therapeutic age-specific care. The candidate will collaborate within a multidisciplinary health team to promote wellness and optimize patient outcomes. Responsibilities include providing the surgical team with the necessary instruments, sutures, special equipment, and materials needed to perform surgery while maintaining strict aseptic technique. The candidate will assist in circulating, obtain instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary while the surgical procedure is in progress, and participate in unit/departmental/institutional performance improvement activities that impact patient and service outcomes.
Job Responsibilities:
- Comply with regulatory and institution policies governing safety standards, infection control, handling of sharps, and patient belongings. Ensure appropriate emergency equipment is present and operational. Label all medication solutions on the field with name, dosage, and initials, and perform a read back with RN/CST. Participate in implementing the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System plan as required. Initiate corrective actions when counts are incorrect.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Observe patient’s clinical status and report findings to the RN. Address patient issues following established communication hierarchy. Participate in problem identification and problem solving in the work environment.
- Review plan of care during perioperative stay, monitor variances, and modify plan of care under the direction of the RN. Observe patient progress during perioperative stay with the RN.
- Provide direct care for specific patient assignment reflective of current and changing status of the patient. Provide the surgical team with the necessary instruments, sutures, special equipment, and materials needed to perform surgery while maintaining strict aseptic technique. Observe potential and actual changes in level of care required, notify the RN, and follow the updated plan of care under the direction of the RN.
- Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives, peer review, mentor relationships, and formal and informal education and orientation of new employees as needed. Assist and support team members. Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-services or obtain information presented.
- Ensure completion of patient care assignment, quality control of equipment daily, and escalate issues as needed. Work to improve and/or maintain HCAPS scores. Delegate aspects of care of the patient to team members consistent with scope, capabilities, and responsibilities of the caregiver and supervise completion of assigned tasks.
- Communicate with patients, families, and members of the health care team. Recognize and respond to issues that may cause problems and/or refer issues through the proper chain of command utilizing the escalation policy. Document legibly.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify, you must have a High School Diploma or equivalent required, with 1-2 years of operating room experience preferred. Must be a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program through NBSTSA. Certification exam must be taken and passed within 12 months of completion of the surgical technologist program. Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Course Completion is required. Strong communication (both written and oral), critical thinking, problem-solving, detail orientation, interpersonal, and customer service skills are essential. Basic computer skills and the ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations are also required.
Required Licenses: Cert Surgical Technologist, Basic Life Support Cert
Preferred Qualifications:
1-2 years in a Surgical Technologist role.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $38.00 - $38.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
