It is through this joint effort between Frederick County Public Schools and Frederick County Health Department that the School Health Services provides the link between health and education. This link is the key to the success of every student in Frederick County. This position provides professional nursing service to designated Frederick County public schools. Supervision is given to the assigned Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and/or Health Room Technician-CNA/CMTs; supervision is received from a Manager.

- Supervise and evaluate Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Health Room Technician-CNA/CMTs (HRTs) in several assigned school buildings
- Delegate nursing functions to HRTs as mandated through the MD State Board of Nursing
- Evaluate the effectiveness of health services provided by LPNs and HRTs.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate health services provided to students in the assigned schools
- Serve as liaison/collaborator between the schools, students, parents/guardians, and health care providers
- Develop, write and implement health care plans for specific individual students, and evaluate their effectiveness in meeting the students' needs
- Interpret students' health/developmental status and needs to parents/guardians and school personnel, and provide education and training to protect students’ safety.
- Assist in obtaining and maintaining emergency cards, immunization records and other appropriate student medical documents.
- Help families to find and use available health resources and be available to attend medical appointments with families and to visit families in their homes
- Compile and maintain a file of current health education materials for students and faculty and serve as consultant and resource person for the health education program
- Participate in establishing policies and procedures for emergency care of student injuries/illnesses
- Implement and interpret defined protocols and procedures, as well as programs for the prevention and control of communicable diseases
- Investigate communicable diseases in the school setting
- Promote effective sharing of information resources among the community, health care professionals and the school(s)
- Analyze school health records and reports in order to develop and/or modify health programs to meet healthcare needs of school communities
- Attend and participate in faculty, staff and community meetings as it pertains to school health
- Provide on-site health room coverage to care for students’ chronic conditions, acute injury and illness.
- Provide appropriate health education for schools and communities as needed
- Perform other related duties as required

- Graduation from an accredited Nursing program with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum 2 years of RN work experience (within the last 5 years) in public/community health nursing and/or school health nursing, primary care
- Current Registered Nurse license through the Maryland State Board of Nursing (or current RN license from another state, with ability to obtain Maryland RN license following hire)
- Current certification in CPR by a recognized certification body (e.g. American Red Cross, Heart Association, etc.) or ability to be so certified during the orientation process
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to successfully complete mandatory RN Case Manager/Delegating nurse training course through Maryland State Board of Nursing
- Knowledge of program assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation
- Knowledge of Maryland State laws, rules and regulations governing School Health Nursing
- Knowledge of the State Nurse Practice Act in order to recognize the legal aspects of nursing
- Ability to effectively plan, direct and supervise the work of others
- Ability to accurately review and interpret statistical reports and information
- Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including public speaking skills
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other health care professionals, students and parents/guardians, and the general public
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
- BSN degree or a related Master's degree
- Current certification as a school nurse or a child/adolescent certification such as pediatric nursing, maternal child health nursing, etc.
- Related experience in a School Health Program
- Completion of a RN Case Manager/Delegating nurse training course through Maryland State Board of Nursing
- Work experience specifically in pediatric or medical surgical nursing
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- While working in this position, the employee is occasionally lifting between 20-50 pounds and frequently driving
- While working in this position, the employee is constantly working indoors
- This position is subject to random drug testing to include marijuana
- Ability to provide own transportation to area schools, meetings, home visits and other commitments
- Available to respond on-call as essential personnel in the event of an emergency situation
