The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities:
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, and recording maintenance data.
- Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
- Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test order.
- Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% correctness.
- Packages specimens for transport.
- Stores specimen samples according to required temperature and places samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling them.
- Follows different procedures as outlined by specific protocols deemed necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
- Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attends annual department trainings.
- Answers telephone calls and reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School diploma or equivalent or Phlebotomy Certification.
